Leap of Faith

I've been thinking of getting in to this biz as an O/O without signing on with a company. Does anyone have suggestions on this idea? Can someone tell of loadboards specifically for the expediting loads? Please offer advice whether positive or negative or just your opinions(we all know there's plenty of those found here). THANKS FOR ALL INPUT AHEAD OF TIME!!

I'd suggest you sign with a company for at least two years.

Reasons:

1. Cost for your operating authority.

2. Time (which is money) when sitting with a DOT officer who conducts a safety review.

3. Additional paperwork in keeping maintenance log required for safety review.

4. Cost to have a third party administor a random drug screening program and more paperwork.

5. A substantial increase in your insurance rates.

6. A 30 day wait time on getting paid for your runs.

7. And how will you look for load offers while driving or sleeping? This is the greatest hinderance of all.

loadboards aplenty. use search. follow the above advice. in order to make a small fortune in this biz as an indie o/o you neeed to start with a large fortune.

now is not the time to jump in w/o a lifeline.

What size vehicle are you planning on using? I have operating authority for vehicles 10,000# and under. The cost for the authority is about $500 if you go thru a service to get it. With this authority there is no safety review, no maintenance logs are required, and you do not need a drug test. The insurance rates are about the same as being leased to a carrier. If you use a freight factoring service you can get paid within a day or two. I know nothing about looking for loads as I deal directly with shippers and they call me. If you are new to expediting you should lease to a carrier for awhile. This is a fairly easy business to learn so a year or less should be fine.
