We once made around $2200 for 3 miles. One other load we got paid just under $500 for 2 blocks.

Take 'em when you can get 'em. It is all you can do.

I was almost late to pickup on my last job. It was 49 miles to the pickup. I was given the load at about 13:30 with a pu time of 18:09. I planned to leave for the pu around 15:30. I called in about 13:55 to ask for the pu name/addr and was asked if I was on the way. I said no but would be leaving by 15:30. She said the pu is at 15:00 and I said no it's at 18:09 for the job I accepted and she said well it changed. I left immediately and they bumped the time to 15:20 and I still got there about 14:50. When your status is clink NO they should call you with such information not just send it over the clink.

I came close to being late for a pickup recently too, and for the dumbest reason ever, lol. I got a new Garmin, and forgot that it displayed time in Central [I bought it in Iowa] instead of the Eastern I'm used to.
I fixed it now.

Who pays 2200 for 3 miles ? Do tell we are all interested in this story!

It was a few years ago. We hauled a very "special" load from it's assembly point to an airport for loading onto an Air Force cargo plane. The load had to be grounded and keep at temp.

First they grounded it to the fork lift. Then to my truck. They then loaded the freight. Then we had to ground the freight to the aircraft. That is where the problems started. They could not get a ground to work. We were 10 minutes away from loading the truck, with the freight grounded to the truck, onto the aircraft. THAT would have paid REALLY good! I insisted that IF we drove onto the plane I would require pictures. They even agreed to that. Too bad they got a ground before that happened.

We got about $700 once for a load less than 2 blocks. When I finished securing the 1 item I had handcarried to the truck and closed the door, I could turn around and see the delivery point. I was tempted just to walk the load to the other spot, but was too lazy to walk back, so I drove down there and then handcarried the item into the new location. Best part is that I got the load as an incentive to take a load going to Miami FL that I didn't want because it paid me to go to Jacksonville and thus get out of Miami.

we did a similar job once, and they flat told us that their preference would have been to drive the truck onto the plane and fly the whole rig to Alaska, but that they didn't have the budget for the plane necessary to carry that size load. Ironically, the load cancelled on us twice (once before loading and once at the plane) due to a volcano eruption.

As long as you inform your carrier the second you think you MAY be late for a pick up or delivery you will be ok. More advanced notice prior to your protect the better! Also do the math after you load at a shipper (miles div by 50 mph) to insure you can meet the delivery time as dispatched on you QC or times given by dispatch. If your going to be past the protect I would place a call to dispatch if they do not recalculate your protect time after a delay at the shipper.

If you follow these procedures and still get dinged by your carrier at least you have some recourse. " I told Steve in dispatch after I loaded my protect was ...., or I called so and so half hour before my pick up time to inform her I was in heavy traffic and may be late". If you call 10 minutes prior to a protect to say tour still 45 miles out.. Yeah that could be an issue.
