Canada Last minute help please!

I just bought/financed a 5 ton expedited straight truck but have not done commercial driving before, I have sub-contracted on to a freighting company in the toronto area and they want me to start work immediately (local runs).

Do I need to get a CVOR # myself, or is this provided by the carrier? I went to MTO's website, and it was not clear at all. If the CVOR is a commercial driving abstract, I figure it would be tied to the driver in which case I would need one. How long does it take MTO to do this (in person at MTO? can it be done on site in a day?)

Thanks for the replies, I searched the forums here but couldn't find anything too specific.

You will be operating under your carrier's cvor.
You didn't go thru Kennedy to get your truck, did you?

I just printed my CVOR from MTO's website by entering my D/L number. It shows I have a valid AZ license, medical due dates but does not display my CVOR number anywhere.

I assume that this is something I need.:confused:

Why can't the government make things easy for us :p

Sorry, I spoke too soon.. it depends if your carrier will be getting the ownership/plates etc under their name.. or yours.. do you happen to know?
If you apply for a CVOR, it should only take a few days in the mail.. I don't know if you can go in to get one.. you can't just walk into any location, but maybe there is one in Toronto that looks after them.. but I don't think you can just get one over the counter.

Hmm, well the company I am going to be working for never mentioned anything about the CVOR during our meeting we had. They said they will get getting me my IRP plates through the companies name but I pay for them (this was on Thursday).

During the meeting I had with the freighting company the only other info he needed from me was copies of my passport, birth cert and criminal abstract.

I would call them but it seems the office is closed on weekends...

base plates are in my name
i have copies of the vehicle and plate permits (vehicle is in the leasing companies name) plate is in the freighting companies name

Yes, sounds like the plates (and ownership) will be going in their name.. so you won't need yours, but, if I were you? I would apply for one right now, before the plates change. Then when the time comes to switch carriers, you will already have it. It will be less hassle then.

Do some research online.
They're an offshoot of Kennedy, I believe even owned by Kennedy.
They will own you.
They're not well respected in the industry, including amongst insurers here.
There are better companies out there who would be happy to have you.

well, i did find one negative review on them from rip-off-report.

are they really bad? should i be worried?

I would spend this weekend really researching, and hopefully some more Ontario people will chime in here.. because I know we all know about them. I know you also need to get started right away, to start making money to pay for everything.
You say you don't have any commercial driving exp but you have an AZ? Did you take a course? That can count for some experience, with some companies.
Are you supposed to start on Monday? Or could you take Monday to investigate your options with others?
Honestly? When we went to get our own insurance.. the broker says to me.. 'you didn't work for avastar, did you????'.. it's kinda scary.. the vibes out there.. about them.. I'm not really sure why.. are they 'self-insured'? If so, that could be part of it.

Also.. I'm certain Kennedy gets a kickback for sending drivers/OOs to carriers.. and I've heard many carriers also have low regard for kennedy.. you would be best to find your own contract.

I'm sure Kennedy does get a kick back, not much of a concern for me. From what I've seen so far, the rates they are offering are consistent to what others post on here, i already have a copy of the insurance statement, so they aren't self-insured. i know the first month will be slow paying back start up costs, but after that it should pick up so i can pay off my costs.

Found this, so the answer to my question is YES.

An Owner/Driver operating under contract with a licensed carrier is not considered to be a licensed carrier and is therefore required to obtain an Owner/Driver or Single/Source Authority. In this situation, the Owner/Driver is still required to obtain their own CVOR Certificate, but they operate under the CVOR number of their contractual employer.

Well, glad you found something. They sure don't make things simple and straightforward, do they? I'm still finding that wording difficult to understand. Maybe I'm dumb. :)

From what I understand, everyone has to have their own CVOR. But when you are under contract to a freighting company, you operate under their CVOR numbers, but you still need to have your own.

So now I have to rush to MTO Monday morning and see if they can put a rush order on this!

All commercially licensed drivers in ontario have a cvor.

There are two cvor's 1) your drivers 2) your carriers

You do not need to go to the mto for anything. Your carrier should have you listed as a driver under their cvor. If you get a drivers cvor abstract it should show the carrier you are leased/drive with.

You will only need your own carriers cvor if you get your own operating authority. Your driver's cvor is automatic.

P.S - Why does your carrier need a copy of your passport and birth certificate if you are running local?
