After i unloaded this morning i stopped by the J here in laredo to transflow in paperwork. As i was leaving the parking lot i noticed a yellow penske 15 ft. box van sitting there with Landstar signs on the sides. It was a little beat up also and i was just surprised that landstar would lease on something like that, because almost all other Landstar vans I've seen are sharp looking . ??

I would think that it was taken on by a driver whose truck broke down and wanted to continue to drive loads, expensive tosay the least, when my st8 broke down last month, I lost 3 solid good weeks while awaiting all the repair parts and stuff needed to get going, I toggled around with the thought of a rental for a while, but lost that urge quick when I did the math, i also thought of getting a job at burger king, (just kidding)probably would have equalled out!

Landstar won't let you use a rental. You have to have a Qualcomm.

Could have been an Agents truck or running for an Agent. You don't have to be leased to Landstar to haul their freight. You can be an approved carrier, get on their load board, pull for an Agent or both. If you can get a good relationship going with a couple of L/S agents, they will run you, but first you have to be approved by L/S. You do not need a Sat/ to do that since you are not leased.

Pretty sure when they sell a truck all markings and numbers are removedi doubt any independent broker trucks have signs for who they are hauling freight or I'd have a bay full of panther fed x landstar ups etc

True unless he hauls regular for them. There are still some customers that won't load a truck w/out company signs. One of mine is that way.
