Just for the Smokers

I just wanted to point out that North Carolina and South Carolina seem to be the cheapest I've seen on cigarettes so far after the tax increase. I don't smoke the high price name brands. But Dorals are about $29 a carton here in North Carolina and if I remember correctly they were a little cheaper in South Carolina.

Please no negative comments from the non-smokers. This is just to help the ones who do smoke and decided not to quit even because of the price going up.

Yikes! I had no idea cig prices were so high. I quit 12 years ago, and we could get the brand names (vantage or B&H) for $17 on sale... And we thought THAT was pricey!

LOL Ya, I'm sure we will probably see that happening more. Especially in the states where a carton of Dorals cost $70 to $80 and in South Carolina you can get them for $29. Add $20 a carton, sell a couple hundred you have a profit. I'm sure you will see it happening, if not, its probably you are not looking for them.

I know I paid about $8 for a pack of Doral around Washington D.C. area. And that was before the federal tax increase. Just like the ole days of bootlegging liquor, its just going to be tobacco now. Which bootlegging tobacco has happened already in the past, but now its going to be a larger portion.

non-smoker here too, but I noticed that the name brands here in Michigan are up to about $60 a carton. YIKES.. Last time I smoked, I could get Marlboro for $11 a carton. Geez.. I'm old..

I thought the name brands were already about $60 a carton before the new taxes? When was the last time you saw that price? Because our great governor of michigan passed a tax on cigs long time ago to raise them that high.

Great news about our great governor of Michigan, she can not be elected for another term. :D

Here's a PDF file listing the State, Federal and Combined taxes, listed by state.

Cigarette Taxes

Federal taxes are $1.0066 per pack. Michigan's state tax is $2.00, so you're looking at $3.01 in combined taxes alone in that state, same as Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Hawaii, Maine and Maryland (Washington state is $2.025).

Rhode Island - $2.46
Massachusetts - $2.51
New Jersey - $2.575
New York - $2.75

Alabama is just 43.5 cents, Mississippi is 18 cents, Missouri is 17 cents, and the winner is South Carolina at seven cents.

Thanks Turtle....

BTW..I've heard a rumble there is a house bill pending in S.C. For a .06 per pack raise in the tax...that would still make them the lowest though....

Would expect nothing less of a Canadian born Governor in Mi....she knows the revenue from SIN taxes...as called in Canada.
Try Alberta...$95-100 bucks a carton...and they don't have provincial sales tax!!!

The higher the taxes get, the more people there are who quit, which results in fewer people paying the taxes, so the taxes have to be raised to keep the revenue up. Eventually, there will be like 9 people in a state that still smokes, and they'll be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars per pack.

Take this with a grain of salt....the last numbers that were thrown out...by Stats. Can....56% are non smokers in PQ and 54% for Ontario....so the majority does rule up there...

Quit cold turkey here when Marbs hit 3$ a pack. when I started they were $1.45 **hint** Try going to the Indian Reservations ie: the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa doesn't have Fed Tax on Cigs and last I remember you could still get them **Marbs*** for $25 a carton. don't know where there are other indian reservations that sell smokes but it may help
