Jr. can't take the 8

Seems like Teresa is shooting herself in the foot a bit with this one.

But, the bigger issue is the bucks people have invested. In some cases, BIG bucks! What if you have one of those Monte Carlos, or one of those Volvos?

Not surprisingly, money was the issue. DEI wanted a bigger cut of the merchandising than Jr wanted to give. So now, DEI will end up with zilch unless they can get another real big name to use the number. Also, the perceived good will would have gone a long way with the fans, and Jr's fans are a very vocal bunch.

No Highway,
I am commenting on the need to even worry about it, no disrespect intended. As you say, it is all about the mighty buck, not the sport, not the fan. If it was about the sport or the fan, we would not have the widow trying to trademark a number.

NASCAR ranks up there with Formula 1 and other racing as the sports I follow, far above Baseball and football which was explained to me by the people who run the teams here. But I found when Dale Sr. croaked, the vigils and the grief consular coming into the company to help people cope just was too d*mn much for me to stomach. Just drive the car, just try to win the race and entertain us!

Oh I got to throw this in, I was in Denver using the laundry facilities at the J there off of Airport road and found it really odd to see these rough and tough (some stank) truckers sitting there watching ...... Golf! I would figure they would have a race on or some rerun of CSI like everywhere else but Golf? and cheering Tiger to beat all. My twilight zone moment.

You, as a fan, may not see it as a big issue. For me personally, I feel the same way. I have no shirts, hats or anything else that is NASCAR. I think that the average fan is different. I see it around me everyday, everywhere I go. These fans love their favorite drivers and will spend LOTS of money to show it. NASCAR merchandising is big business. And, the numbers are a big part of it. 8, 24, 20, 48 would probably qualify as the biggies. Now the JR fans have to go and spend more money if they wish to be current.

As far as DEI, what are they gonna do with the number? Most likely, they'll never make any real money off it anymore. A high profile driver probably won't want it. He'll want his own identity. It would seem like a smaller piece of something would be better than having all of nothing. They also have to deal with the wrath of the rabid, booing, beer can throwing JR fans who get ##### at the mere suggestion of him being dissed.

So, are these valid points in the big picture? Or, does none of it matter because Greg334 doesn't care? I realize this isn't the Iraq war or Social Security collapsing, but I think NASCAR fans are talking about it. No disrespect intended.

Oh, and just for the record, I'm not "worried" about it.

The teams, or the driver such as jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, DEI, have registered trade mark rights on the numbers, An idea started by Dale Sr.He being a good friend of Jeff Gordon advised him to do it too. And so it began....
I predict that in 5 years, DEI and Childress will be so combined that they will get Jr. back and he will drive the #3
