My friend bought a used motor with a 60 day 20k warranty
120 days later it thru a rod he ended up buying a reman and spent 18k by the time he was done!

On a North American slop bucket one can afford to do something like that....a Sprinter....not so much...

Haven't decided what to do yet.... Considering pulling it into our pole barn and rebuilding it if possible have a local machine shop willing to look at what's left of I pull it for em.... And my van is edgy it's not a rust bucket ... But due for tires and a new driver seat on top of a motor... And that's assuming the other 700k+ mile components hold together ..

Wouldn't let the price of tires or a seat be your deciding factor. But I suppose it one more thing to look at.. Here's hoping you get back out here soon.

Is the auxiliary battery isolated from the starting battery?

Yes, and QC unplug. Had a deep cell test on the battery done and it check out excellent, to my dismay. IDK, maybe I misjudged how cold it's been even with the engine block heater running, just seems odd. Wondering if a starter that wasn't 100% would cause a lack of cranking ability? Pretty clueless on that.

the slightest drop in amperage a sprinter won't start...its idiot proofed so you don't sit there and burn out the starter.... 2 yrs is about the average time of my battery life....
It probably would have started if you boosted it off your aux battery...

A bad ground or even a little corrosion woul cause a slow starter I clean mine prior to winter every year in my battery maintainence
In my m2 I discovered a terminal block located behind the batteries with all sorts of green connections a little wire brushing and some cleaning sprayed with a red protection coating and slow starts are now a thing of the past I'd go there first before battery's I they check ok

I think 2 years is about the longest "safe life" of any battery in expediting. That's a lot of miles and a lot of revs by the alternator. My last battery was bought in Laredo August of 12 and by fall of 14 it was starting to slow a little. It made it through the winter but a few "fan on too long" or "GPS on all night" sessions made for some SLOW starts. We still have that battery (swapped into Sally's van) and the starts are getting slower and slower. It's time. Past time.
Moral? Plan on 2 years. Isolate it if you run a battery bank. Don't take too many chances.
