Jailed for a 5 cent theft

The guy doesn't believe that taking things without permission is theft? His choice of car doesn't mean he just gets to make other people pay for his transportation. Would he view it as theft if someone took money out of his wallet or stole the change out of his car for gas money?

How long would he had left it plugged in if not busted?

Technically it is theft. Technically it's a crime. Common sense should come into play somewhere.

Back in the day.....one may have been approached in this situation, and perhaps sternly told they could not hook up to that power source. Would even go so far as to say, most people would not have said anything. (my opinion having lived in more simple and common sense era)

Arrested? Handcuffs? Charges? It's not as if the guy was sneaking over at midnight and plugging the car in over night. Common sense would seem to dictate a verbal reprimand at best.

“Of course I agree that theft is theft, what I don’t agree with is that every taking of something without permission is theft,” he said, adding that there was no one at the school to ask permission from at the time."

Taking something without permission is not theft? No wonder things are SO screwed up in this country. What a dead beat. I have to buy ALL of my own fuel for this truck AND my pick up at home. Why should HE get fuel for free. Sounds like theft to me and a VERY sick sense of entitlement. Good way to teach his kids. It's OK to take what you need, Sonny, after all, it's only theft SOMETIMES, and besides, there was no one around to ask if it was OK to mooch power.

What was the population of the prison system again? I wonder how many are there because some DA was being too vindictive, and totally threw out common sense. Next, you'll be hearing of an entire 8th grade being arrested for littering in the school halls, and costing the community money, for having the custodian clean it up.

This was a non-story, and should've stayed that way.

Jail MAY be too much, letting him get away with it teaches his kid ANOTHER lesson. It's OKEE DOKEE to steal. A thief is a thief. A moocher is a moocher. It would seem that this dud is both. I pity his kids. Not a very good example of a man.

I agree it was kind of extreme but from the way the guy talks it sounds like he has a habit of charging his car for free whenever he can.

What would happen if someone pulled up to a school bus and sciphoned a few cents out whenever it was handy?

I agree the guy has a defective moral compass and sounds like a jerk. Common sense would say make him cough up a dime and give it to the school and tell him he can't charge his car there without prior written permission from either the school principal or school board chairman. What they've done will cost thousands of dollars to what's almost assuredly a bankrupt system.

Spending dollars to chase dimes is government at its best.

Wow: Mr Entitled missed the chance to demonstrate moral behavior to the kid along with his tennis lesson, [if you can't get permission, it's not ok to act as if you did] then the LEOs go so far overboard that respecting them is tough.
I'm just wondering why the overreaction by the cops - seems like there must be more to the story.

CNN is reporting that SWAT teams have been sent to all airports to deal with the maniacs charging their cell phones.

I wonder how many cell phones are being charged at police stations without tax payers permission

Yeah, theft is theft, but arresting the guy for stealing a nickel's worth of electricity is like getting arrested for farting in class. It's ridiculous.

And one wonders why the US has the highest arrest and incarceration rate in the world.

Hope all of you are asking permission before you charge you phones or laptops while eating at the truck stops or fast food joints.

Do you think it to be a little worse to draw food stamps, welfare, unemployment, or a number of other "free" benefits when you could work but don't.

Yes, a ticket would have been the way to go, or civil action. He can't be allowed to get away with that stuff, it is theft and he, by his own words, is a low down moocher.

This example is a little more gray. Many places like that provide charging to draw customers. What this guy did was steal electricity from the school district, which is NOT there to provide charging for cars.
