I guess it would depend on where you figured to head north to I-40 .... I-10 the mileage is 2418, it is 100 miles farther if you go to Phoenix and cut up.
If you go Shreveport, Dallas, Amarillo it is 2476 ..... but .. who would want to get into those mountains in unsettled weather? Stay south and enjoy the warmth!

Well, with a Miami to San Fran, if you want to avoid FL tools, it's not many more miles to shoot up I-95 to I-295W to I-10W in Jacksonville. However, it will be more congested than taking the Turnpike to I-75 and up to I-10. Take I-10 west to downtown LA, then I-5 all the way up to 890 around Oakland, I believe. That will take you to the coast. I agree with the I-10 route as you will save fuel not needing to climb the mountains.

Speaking of Florida tools, I just had the driver in my truck quit this morning. He hadn't even run a load yet. I spent time getting him compliant with drug testing and all. He emailed me the morning he would've initially gone into service and asked me to wait. He then called me and asked me if he could take a few more days off, as his wife had booked tickets for some event out of state and he forgot. She didn't think we'd have him ready so fast. So he leaves for a whole week, which ended up being really busy for us. I finally put him in service, only to have the worst two weeks we've probably had in the last year (for outbound FL loads), but that was ok with him, because he didn't mind being around the house a bit more to take care of some things before he went back on the road. So now he all of a sudden decides that this business is too iffy for him and he's quitting. He won't deadhead, even though I would be footing the fuel bill.
What a flake!

Since you now mention you are going to San Francisco, may I suggest an alternative route?
Just be sure you have plenty of fuel before leaving I-10! There are no services along this route, but it completly avoids LA and all that traffic.
Also once it reaches I-15 by Hesperia, do NOT take 18 across, as there is ongoing construction by Palmdale.
At Az exit 45, on I-10, (Vicksburg Road), go north into Vicksburg, Az to Hwy 72 .. follow 72 west to Parker, Ca, where you will find Ca Rt 62 west, to Rt 247, by Yucca Valley, then north on Rt 247 to Victorville and I-15. There are several ways to get on over onto Hwy 395 north, (choose your own local route). Then Hwy 395 north to Hwy 58 to beyond Barkersfield to I-5.
That route is 2813 miles, and avoids Los Angeles all together ... and a pretty run in the daytime ..... see if you can spot Rice AFB out there!

There are plenty of "tools" up and down the coast. Most of the "tolls" run through the middle of the state.
