It's time for a ban

Yes, unfortunately we move farther and farther away from considering others and how our actions may impact them. We're told from every angle it's about our rights not the other guy so unfortunately that requires more and more rules to achieve what should be common sense and automatic.

It's ridiculous to the point of being comical that someone can think they have rights as a smoker, and that those rights supercede everyone elses. 50 years ago, half the population smoked and the dangers were just becoming documented. Smokers are now a minority. If there are 20 people in a room and 5 of them smoke isn't it logical that other 15 should not have to put up with smoke? Even though this has nothing to do with the Bill of Rights, if someone is going to try to make that argument, then what about the rights of the non-smoker? I guess they are'nt represented.

I think both sides have valid arguments, but in the grand scheme of life, this isn't even on the radar screen as there are other issues that are much more important to me and my family. Yes one can complain that walking through a truck stop will make their clothes smell like smoke. But then unless you are in a glass bubble, you would then go walk through a truck lot and smell of diesel fumes. Just a personal observation. Which smell is better? I don't believe either one is any more healthier than the other. How many would not idle or use a APU to accomadate a smoker that doesn't want to be exposed to deisel? I can only imagine the numbers.
Like I said, for me personally, there are other things that I would rather direct my efforts towards.

>Thawk, this isn't a Constitutional issue. Nowhere in there

>I am not for a total ban on smoking, primarily because it
>would work no better than prohibition did with alcohol. I am

Wow, Then they should go one step further and Ban all alcohol products. Look through all the facts. Drinking kills more people each year than smoking.
Yes I smoke and I no longer drink (16 yrs) What if we were to say that all right handed people can not drive truck? then what?
And when working in a place where I could smoke, my time was equal to the others who went and took their breaks eating candy bars and drinking coffee.

PS should we also Ban all recruiters who lie to us, just to make the monthly quota numbers?

sounds like some of these people would like to go back to the days of prohibition.which if my memory of history lessons serves me right, it didnt go so well. so if the guy or girl in the truck stop resturaunt sitting in the booth next to me smells and looks like he aint had a shower in six months and can go put his hands all over the buffet food and that aint on the agenda of bad smells and acceptable practices,(them germs have as bad of an affect on your health to)anyway just my opinion but the way i see it with the way the world is today u have a better shot of being shot going to the corner store than dying from the smell of second hand smoke. my grandmother is living prove of that she has lived ten years past the time of my grandfather who smoked for 60 yrs and had 2 heart attacks and three bypasses one world war and 35 yrs at g.m powertrain in ypsilanti,mi(and anybody that has been in that place knows what im talking about.so in the end either u have the genes for cancer or u dont and smell shoulnt be the reason,i cant stand the smell of cow dung the farmers put on there feilds this time of the year either but i aint callin for a ban on cow dung.:p

Highway... please read my entire post. What I was basically saying was that the federal government has no jurisdiction on a public smoking ban. It's up to the states. That's what the 10th Bill of Rights says. I'm not saying I have a right to smoke, just a guarantee from government interference at the national level on the issue. States can, and should, do what is important to their citizens. And, I do what I can to stay out of restaurants that don't allow smoking.

I don't think this will need to go to the federal level. A lot is happening at the state and local level. I just get really irritated at people who see it as some kind of entitlement. I had dinner with my kids and some friends over the holidays at a bar/restaurant. The group next to us got into this topic and a few of them seemed to think they should be able to smoke anywhere because it was that way for years. Their "right" to smoke is more important than those who don't want to be bothered by it. I got the subject going at our table but all my opinion got was a glare.

It would be so nice if smokers & non could just quit bugging each other!
But when aggressive & competitive sports require a feature on the front page of every paper, every day, along with an entire section devoted to the subject, and no newscast is complete without the "scores", along with entire radio & cable channels featuring nothing else, while the quaint subject of "etiquette" is a once-a-week paragraph in some newspapere, relegated to the "women's" section of fashion & cooking, where does that put the value of consideration on our list of family values? :-(

I'm with you on this one Leo.In fact,it is the law in San Francisco,as well as other cities in California.
I have been refeered to as a "smoking Nazi"on this forum for even thinking about bringing up smokeing. As you said, not all,but many smokers just don't get it.Should they have the same opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to stink the joint up,I say no,no,no.Take it out to the furthest place in the truck stop and light up.

I remember Rush talking about a humidor/restaurant he goes to. They were sitting and having a cigar with their meal, and a lady looked at them like they were criminals. I can't remember which state he was in, but it was a non-smoking state. Being that they were in a humidor, the laws didn't apply there. But the non-smoking lady was agast that they were smoking in a SMOKE SHOP! Gimme a break!

I do believe smoking truckers outnumber non-smoking truckers. This is one of the few areas we are the majority.
Besides... next time you want to gripe about being in the minority on this matter, remember most of us are also a straight truck in a semi's world. Choose which agendas you'd like to see pushed, as I'm sure there are several that are going to push you the same way. And you'll need allies in the ppl you've just crossed.

Entirely too many rights of Supposedly American Citizens have been taken away! I SMOKE-- I like a good drink of LIQUOR and DAMMIT I PAY TAXES TOO! I fought for my country on foreign soil--- and only to be told what I can and ca'nt do here in the USA. Smoking is not illegal and if it ever becomes such--- then I will still smoke as long as I enjoy it.

Please do'nt be like one person who made a rude and off the wall comment to me while I was smoking in a parking lot. He ended up with most of his nose under his left ear. I wo'nt spare the next person either!

If you are out in a parking lot then I'd just walk around you. It's indoors where I'd like to watch the movie or eat or look around the store that is the problem. If all the smoke stayed inside the smoker it would be different but a person can't smoke without infringing on everyone around. You may be one of the exceptions but the majority of smokers are inconsiderate of anyone but themself or they'd only smoke outdoors and away from the building.

I heard of a death because of a smoking ban yesturday

some 80 year old grandpa walked out of a bar in scottland to have a smoke.
fell and hit his head and died from the impact.if the smoking ban had not been in place he would still be puffing away.

it is freedom of choice

its funny how even in states with smoking bans in place most casinos are exempt why?

because they told the goverment it would hurt there bussiness to much
to ban smoking.

I smoke and I wish someone would ban public farting.it really stinks just like this topic
