It's The End Of The World

It's The End Of The World As We Know It, And I feel Fine! R.E.M.

Hi! My name is Moot. I own a 2004 Chevrolet cargo van. I am leased to Panther Expedited Services. Also known as Panther 2, Panther ii, Panther II and most recently Panther 11.

I am 53 years young. Pretty cool me throwing in the "young" thing. Eh! I think I read about that in a magazine or a Hallmark card. The "eh", I picked up in Winnipeg. Got a problem with that hoser!

So, eh, I have been reading here on Expediters Online about the demise of G.M., Ford and Chrysler and how it will lead to the end of the world. I've got to tell all of you, or as they say in Florence; you all, that I am an American. I was born an American. And except for 13 years with an LTL company where I was sometimes referred to as comrade, Boris or an anarchist I am still an American.

I have never purchased a foreign car other than the 1973 Mercury Capri I purchased used. I meant to say previously owned. And that I attribute to youthful indiscretion. Hey, it was the 1970's. I also owned 3 motorcycles during the 70's. All of them the Japanese kind. Nippon Seiki forever!

During the 70's most American made motorcyles (read H.D.) were p.o.s. For the money, they still are. If I were in the market for a scooter, it would be a BMW. Yea I know you can't find a black tee shirt that says BMW; Turdville, Georgia, but I can live with that. Most of my tee shirts are blank canvases with some sweat stains and food dribblings.

So as they say on NPR: "I digress." Wow, how cool is that, um, ah. Since I just digressed, should I say excuse me. Or maybe, who stepped on a frog?

Back to the end of the world as we know it. So the American people and their government say no to G.M., Ford and Chrysler as far as giving them boat loads of money to stay afloat. Of course this is the death knell and all three companies immediately shut down.

No more Escalades, Pintos, Hummers, Corvairs, and (sob, sob) the venerable Chevy van. It's the end of the world as we know it. Chuck Darwin had something to say that applies to this current situation. But why bring science and pithed frogs into this?

Being that I am leased to Panther, freight dries up. Panther has never heard of Honda, Nissan, or Toyota. Now I become a statistic. One of the 50% of the expediters who lose their job. I have never been a statistic. Well except for that brief period of my life that I practiced dentistry. I responded negatively to a survey that stated 9 out of 10 dentists recommend flossing once a year. Um..ah..um I digressed again. Please excuse me. Maybe N.P.R. would ah, hire me, actually.

Okay, I'm out of a job. Nobody is buying cars because the big 3 shut down. Let's for the sake of this post not even consider the 50% of people that buy Nissan, Honda, Toyota and European cars made in this country.

If by some miracle I didn't lose my job how would I keep my Chevrolet running? Can I retrofit Sprinter muffler bearings? How will I know how much blinker fluid to add when it comes in mililiters instead of ounces?

As you can see this is certainly the end of the world as we know it. It is time for me to join the rest of you in bungee jumping with an E-Track strap.

No, wait, it may be the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine!

I'm going to keep on keeping on. I'm going to persevere. I'm going where no man....

I going to live to see tomorrow and say no to G.M., Ford and Chrysler. Say no to drugs, the heart break of psoriasis, escrow, world hunger, racial strife, Jap cars, cheap freight and of course roast goose.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and be thankful you aren't employed by Panther, Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and be thankful you aren't employed by Panther, Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

I've met a driver who is leased to a company that has a contract with Nissan, He goes to dealerships, picking up their returns and obsolete parts. Adapting to the market? He's had this gig for 11 years. He's thankful to be employed by Nissan. When were you last upstairs at Panther? Two doors, to the left is Panther, to the right is NLM.

I have been leased to Panther for 2 1/2 years and have never been upstairs. Or downstairs. In fact I have never been to Panther HQ. Ever! And I feel fine.

As far as the end of the world, I feel fine about that too. Maybe it was the martini, or the Ethiopian beaded seat cover or perhaps my hemp undies, but I feel fine.

I was never upstairs when I worked there, but after I moved to one of the other expedite carriers I had an open invitation to visit, as long as the receptionist called up and the dogs were restricted to their owners desks. That way Dingle, my cat, was welcome and I've been permitted to accompany him.
My point was that I don't understand why some people make a differentiation between Panther and NLM.

Moot, brilliant. Just brilliant.

Gotta go, just because Panther books some NLM loads doesn't mean they are NLM or that they book even a majority of NLM loads. NLM makes up a much smaller percentage of Panther loads than one may think. The percentage of NLM freight that I run, or even the percentage of auto freight in general that I run, is much smaller than I would have ever guessed. They have an entire dispatch office in Chicago that doesn't have an NLM department, as well as other office in other locations around the country, not to mention office at some of the larger logistics companies that don't deal in NLM freight at all. Your snapshot doesn't show the whole picture. Not even close.

Are you saying that they have office space in Seville because they are not a subsidiary of Panther? I just 'assume' from what I've seen. As I've said, I left the big name carriers awhile ago.

Panther, Fedex, Tri-state and the list goes on, does business with NLM. NLM is not owned by any expedite company. Each company has departments that bids on NLM loads. Just because they have a department for NLM doesn't mean they work for NLM or Panther owns NLM. They have a department for Toyota too, Panther don't own Toyota. I hope this helps you understand how it works. :)

Ok I will bite..
I love REM, Pintos, Corvair, Turtles and old dudes that drive Chevys..
I love Pithed frogs and and the Medulla oblongata and and the BMW-K1200 (I have a t-shirt from Turdville) but I digress (somebody had to)..
So bye bye Miss American pie drove my Yoter as a toter cause the freight base was dry,
and good ole boys were drinking Whiskey and Rye singing this is the day expedite died..
I went down to the sacred store where I had hauled overpriced freight before
But the man there said the freight was no longer here to score...
So bye bye Miss American pie, drove my Yoter -Chorus please.
POP (point of post) this venue is soo entertaining when freight slows..
You really get to know people when they are faced with the Sword of Damocles.
I am not trying to ruffle feathers but some of you people are really out of character lately.
You know who you are (aren't).
Look forward to the new year and the impending change:rolleyes:
Life is well, perpetual till the end so live it , love it , change it or give up..
Look forward to seeing all (or some) of you in 2009.

They have a department for Toyota too, Panther don't own Toyota.

Too funny. But I can see how someone can make that mistake. You ask about "those people" over there and you hear, "Oh, that's NLM," and I can see how you'd make the connection with that being a "company" instead of merely the NLM Department if ya didn't know better.

It's like at Con-Way, they lumped the NLM people in with all the Internet boards, they did it all. When you asked about "those people" they were simply referred to as, "Oh, that's the Internet."

"Two doors, to the left is Panther, to the right is NLM."

In other words, it's two doors to the left is regular Panther dispatch, and to the right is Panther's NLM and online bid board department. All are Panther employees.

NLM (NLMI, actually) is just a 3rd party logistics company that a lot of carriers book loads from. But they're a really big one, which is why many of the larger carriers will have a dedicated department for NLM loads. They are the primary critical shipment and truckload deviation provider for Ford (just signed a new deal back inthe summer with Ford) and they also provide logistics for many industries including aerospace, chemical, oil, construction, healthcare, pharmaceutical, technology and utilities, in addition to automotive freight.

Tude and Moot may have a career in writing TV sitcom story lines. I particularly liked the "bungee jumping with an e-strap" line. You can`t get more final than that! EH!
Here`s a question...if you are Canadian and you say eh at the end of every sentence (pronounced A) , and you were a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and also The American Automobile Club, would you say I`m a member of AAA and AA eh?

I see the start-up of NLM the same as the infamous QS9000 bull....back in the last big economic turn down the early 80's and a lot of auto exec's and engineers and white collar lost their jobs...QS 9000 appeared...most of the inspectors are from the buyouts of managers and exec's...they created their own jobs...with their OLD connections and buddy system, rules were made you can't produce without a QS 9000 certificate...talk about job security....Then comes the next little downsizing....Voila... NLM shows up....with inside contacts these ex-execs and managers create a monster....deal with them or get nothing....So as you can see...with this turndown expect to see something pop up to employ their own...I haven't a clue what it'll be....but if the trend continues...it'll come...

Leave it to the Mootster to blend sarcasm and common sense in such an entertaining way. I'd like to make a request. How about a song done to the "Beverly Hillbillies" theme.

Good stuff Mike! I had never heard this verse of American Pie. This must have come from the "Don McLean: The Missing Years." album.

I fondly recall some posts by Cheri, Packmule, Highwaystar, OutwardboundII and others that dealt with songs about the expediter. Your American Pie certainly fits right in. Thank you!

You are correct. NLM(I) is a very intensive customer for Panther. In fact, they require providers on that level of service to give them attention 24/7. Unfortunately, about eight hours of my day are spent studying the inside of my eyes lids, not bid boards. So I'll leave that to the fat "cats." They probably have similar dedicated people for Ryder and Penske as well.

Who knows, there may be a few NLM employees working at the Panther litter box. They may also have a cubicle set up for someone from their legal representation. Still, I can tell you that it's been a long time since I've moved anything for anyone that had to do with the Big 3. Automotive yes, Big 3, no!

Moot;

Great post! Yours always are.

I hate to be ignorant but what does the "p.o.s." adjective in your first post mean (when referring to about American made H.D motorcycles)? Just need to know what that adjective stands for, so the next time one of those people that ride those things pulls up next to me, I can tell them why I ride Red.

Have a great one. Keep the shiny side up.
