I can see Linder's point about saving money, but still - don't you have to pay for the number of axles on the truck, regardless of whether you're using the tag at the time of crossing?
I have learned to check too, that I don't get charged as a t/t, when the attendant just sees the tractor part of the truck.

cheri, problem is, most the folks I have observed use a pusher to "allow" for their "toolarge" sleeper, so they may carry that extra few pounds that will allow a 6500lb payload. (or whatever) Then we have to read about sumpin costing too much. If you are going to place an extra axle on the truck, place it so's you can CARRY 25,000 lbs and make some money with it...... then a couple bucks tolls ain't the problem.

You are right on lifting the axle to pay less and I am sure it happens. I believe it is in Ohio you get charged for what you weigh not the axles. We are just in a habit of going to a toll booth and saying two axles please! I know once in California at a snow chain check the officers where not going to let me go by as I didn't have all the axles chained! Took awhile to convince them one axle was only decorative and not on the ground. Boy was his face red.

Our truck was at the limit for a D truck when we bought it and that was before we moved in. If you are going to stay on the road for two to three months at a time with two people in the truck the stress is a lot less if you can be comfortable. Like you income and spending habits comfort is what it is to each person. We like many others know that you have to be available to take loads in order to make money. A hotel in the long run a few times a week might be cheaper but moving your stuff in and out of a hotel is not my idea of fun. Why in the world would we want to leave our comfortable home and get a room? In our mind the sleeper pays for itself with the comfort we have and if it take a lift axle to keep us happy and having fun out here then that is a cheap investment.

That's a good one - decorative axle . I wonder if you could get by telling them that's a spare tire mount . :)

In Louisiana, and maybe one or two more but I'm not sure, if you can adjust the tag from the driver's seat you are in violation and will get a ticket. They suspect folks will lower them just to cross the scales and then raise them again. I guess I'm ignorant but I can't see overloading my equipment rather than leaving it down if it's called for.
