i seen the new fedx reefer sprinter at the expo nice looking. BUT at $70,000 a copy I personnally would never be able to justify that cost. It appeared to only handle 2 skids 48 by 48.
Yes I am sure fedx has a few customers that pay well for that service but enough loads to recoup $70,000.

Problem is...you spend the money now and then you must wait while Fedex builds the customer base which could take years....can you afford to wait? In such time you run .85 cent loads...

i agree van man. a fedx guy said they are doing it for drug loads and paintings. It seems to me it still be more cost effective to put it on one of thier big straights tval of coarse.

Well OVM, that is the problem I see too which comes down to people allowed to come into this business without going through the process that the trucks go through - just for an example logging. I read a lot of times the under 10k regs are thrown into a post and people read into that - an easy and quick way to make money.

The thing I see that causes this is competition within the fleet itself - if one doesn't take the load, another may.

Pretty much I blame the van for most of the problems with cheap freight :p

About the FedEx thing, the customer base is already there, there is no need to worry about that. The question is why are select few allowed to participate?

I agree with this statement:

Vans can and do run it cheaper because their overhead is generally lower and the fact a lot of drivers are unprofessional, untrained, and act more like cab drivers hustling fares then freight specialists.

I think given the delicate nature of the load they want only the most committed people available.....I've seen some drivers I wouldn't send out to get my lunch!
