No Greg, the cost of all these programs are just a "tax" in a covert form. They know that it does not cost hardly anything to do these clearences, SO, they invent all kinds of new ones, charge and arm and a leg and use the funds to by needles for addicts or some other stupid social program. Having been fingerprinted for both Hazmat and FAST, it bothers me to have to do it again for a TWIC card. First because of the high cost to me, but also because I feel that the inability of the various security agencies to share information is downright scary, ya know?
I'm sure I'll get the dam card anyway, but it hardly makes me feel secure in the government's ability to 'protect' us. :(
PS As for pay, if a Hazmat load doesn't pay extra, I won't take it. The extra responsibilities and risk justify extra money, IMO.

I am reluctant to get fingerprinted for the same reasons Ms. Cheri has mentioned

Yes. As to fingerprinting, I have been printed sooo many times I have none left!!! There really is no other choice. Re-checking prints is the only way to insure that you are who you say you are. Besides, I now have disposable fingerprint finger covers that I use. A different set for HAZMAT, FAST and a third for when I get my CCW!!! Keeps 'em guessing. Layoutshooter

Once you've been fingerprinted once, how many times you are fingerprinted after that is, in the end, meaningless. Additional prints are merely a confirmation of your identity. They do compare fingerprints between agencies, as Layout said. When I was fingerprinted for HAZMAT, they compared those to the FAST prints to make sure I was who I said I was. When I renewed my HAZMAT they took new prints and compared them to the previous ones. Unless you're trying to hide your identity, or have stolen someone else's, or plan on committing an evil crime (as opposed to a good, honest, upright and moral crime, I guess) there's really no real reason to fear being fingerprinted.

Do you miss out on a lot of freight if you don't have HAZMAT? Probably not, but it depends on the carrier. Some carriers require you to have it because they haul a lot of HAZMAT loads. If you sign on with them and don't have HAZMAT, and if a lot or most of their loads are HAZMAT, then you're gonna miss out on a lot of freight. Other carriers haul some, but not a lot. In any case, generally speaking, the cost of adding the HAZMAT endorsement to your CDL is really small considering the fact that a single HAZMAT load that you would have otherwise missed will pay for the endorsement. At other times you may be hauling a HAZMAT load where if you didn't have the endorsement you'd simply be hauling another load, instead. If you're with a carrier that pays the same for HAZMAT as a regular load, then there's no real reason to obtain the endorsement, unless HAZMAT is the primary freight for that carrier.

Turtle is right, if your carrier requires it you have to have it. We have to have it. It is enough of a part of our business that I would hate to lose it. If you are really afraid of being printed you have a couple of options, one, haul for a carrier that does not require HAZMAT, or two, don't haul for one that does. If you want access to disposible fingerprints you can buy them at "Spies are Us" or "The Spy Glass" to name a couple of stores that carry them. Hey Turtle, I saw a guy with a "Fear the Turtle" tee shirt on yesterday. He was at the "J" on the north side of Birmingham. You have a REP!!! ;)

my main concern with hazmat is our saftey.what happens if you have an accident?what if it starts leaking toxic fumes?what about picking it up at the shipper your breathing this stuff?obtaining hazmat endorsment easy.knowing how to protect your self and the public not so easy.who in the end is TOTALLY liable once you accept hazmat load.who will pay YOU will.getting your endorsment is only the begining of your training!

You just deal with it. You don't pick up leaking loads, you secure you load and make sure you have the correct paper work. Layoutshooter

$150.00-$200.00 for a Haz Mat test in Michigan? The State must really be hurting for funds. In Missouri there is no charge for the test, plus you can take as many tests as you need to pass.

The cost for a hazmat endorsement in Michigan is the cost of the background check and $25.

The test is free, like everywhere else, but to get that added to your license, it is $25 for any changes.

I got my renewal notice in at the beginning of the month, going to get my finger prints taken at the end and then the week before my license expires, I will go to the SOS office where they speak English and take the test. I maybe adding two other endorsements to my license at this time, can you guess which ones?
