Iraq and benchmarks

I find the entire idea of benchmarks stupid.

I mean you really have to understand the culture to know that we should have talked about this before we started the war with the people who followed us in to establish a government. It should have been all planned out and both Democrat and republican alike in congress are at fault for this - not just one man.

To start forcing this issue on them now without understanding the progress we actually made in their world will lead up to more of an enemy with the Iraqis than a friend.

It's too bad the president cannot whip the Iraq insurgents as well as he takes on the Democratic Congress.

In backing down the Democrats on war funding, Bush may have just executed one of the more remarkable feats of high-stakes brinkmanship in presidential history, a case of sheer will overcoming political forces.

An unpopular president has been able to secure unfettered financing to maintain an unpopular war with no end in sight -- and all this despite nothing but bad news from the battlefield. Even Abraham Lincoln had to show tangible success -- namely, the burning of Atlanta in 1864 -- to sidetrack mounting opposition to the Civil War and avoid what might have been an electoral disaster for himself and his party that year.

Until Republicans on Capitol Hill start casting votes that sync with their public and private complaints about the president's war policy, Bush will continue to get his way. Even in the best-case scenarios for Democrats going forward, they could still fall short of the veto-proof majority they will need to take control of this war. The more likely possibility is that only the 2008 election can change things. And by then, Bush will have kept his war going all the way to his last day in office.

As I have said, the democrats were not elected to get us out of Iraq, the republicans were fired over the departure of their values.

What I mean is that the dems know that they don't have the support of the public on this and many other issues and it is only time when the repub get it together and show some b*lls on the real issues.
