Spotted this Class 7, single-rear-axle, 84" sleeper, CR unit at a pickup today. Interesting truck.

I like the looks of that and have donned my asbestos shorts for the replies when I say I'd like to have one very similar except with a 120" sleeper.

What I'm finding interesting is the clearance (or lack thereof) between the reefer bottom and the top of the sleeper roof. Could it be an allusion caused by the camera angle, or is it as close as it looks?

Granted, its a great looking truck. We actually saw a simular one (dry unit) while we were looking at the KW we have purchased. We wondered if we did one of these, would there be enough clearance for a top mount reefer.

With the Col on this one. Just another small rv with a 14' or so fridge. What's interesting about it? Nice subliminal plug in the background tho.

I too am trying to figure it out.

To me it is just like my truck, except a newer paint job and some chrome where my truck has wear. It goes from point A to point B with the same ability.

Today in Vale Colorado on my trip to Wal-Mart I ran across a bunch of elitists RV's with their million dollar Newell and Liberty Coach RVs sitting at Starbucks which is the same parking lot as Wal-Mart - go figure.

Well anyway, when I parked next to these McMansions, I got such dirty looks and a glare of 'how dare you park near our million dollar motoring living conveniences with that truck'.

These were the same looks that I got from the owners of an expediter apartment on wheels a month or so ago.

Two things most interest me about this truck. First, I imagine its short length and wheelbase makes it one of the most maneuverable expediter straight trucks out there. It would be easier to drive it in places like New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, etc. Second is the cost to build it. With its modest sleeper, class 7 chassis, single axle its cost would be significantly less than some of the the class 8 tandem axle CR and DR units coming to market today. Yet, the pictured truck can haul many of the same loads and make the same money as the more full-featured trucks. My first thought when I saw the truck was, "money maker."

The flip side is the five year useful life a class 7 truck has with FedEx vs. ten years with a class 8.

If you put up good numbers and the truck performs well Fedexcc will give you extensions. When I retired my 96 FL 70 class 7 last year it had been in service 10 1/2 years.

Not too long ago I saw a 1995 cabover UD C truck still in service.

hmmm...That's a t-300 with a 320 horse cummins and a super 10 trans. and a double steel frame,(i think). Would fed-ex still classify that as a 7 ?

More realistically, one of those with the 96" sleeper by Bentz would still be highly maneuverable and very comfortable. It would still be nice with a 120 but 96 is far more realistic.

Wow grog, you must have xray vision to see all that?? Greg, if you pulled along side my camping machine I wouldn't glare at you, i'd vite ya in for a coolielike I do the other expediters. Anyway, they were probably looking with envy, thinking he's out here dikkin off like us, only making money. To you other two, I hate to burst your bubble, but, fedex is not the only place to run a truck:+ :+ :+

Hate to say it, but an aircraft carrier has a better turning radius than a T-300.

Ok... maybe a destroyer. ;)

Phil, I agree with what you are saying but my truck is about the same size as that one and I would venture to say I have a better turning radius than the KW there. I drove a couple of them and just didn't like the cramped feel of the cab.

x06col,
Thanks for the comments, I would like to see your McMansion.

x06col, I think i looked at that truck last year, it was run by a couple out of Arizona,(again, i think!). But seriously, does fed-ex consider that a class 7...or...would it qualify as a class 8? Just curious.

Only busting you chops there grog. But, when i'm not at the beach, I kinda wish I had those xray eyes sometimes. Can't help with what fedex considers what. Could care less what they consider.

As Rich mentioned, I don't believe Fedex is holding to those requirements. Sounds like as long as it is safe and passes a DOT, it is good to go. With too few trucks, I don't see them changing that anytime soon. Same with alot of other carriers. With the price of the sevens getting around the 100,000 mark, it would make little sense at todays rates to be with a carrier that requires those numbers.

FedEx contractor literature specifies truck age limits. It is not automatic that an older truck of any class is, for that reason alone, disqualified. Inspection standards increase for older trucks.
