Some of you may already know some/all of this. You guys are wanting some inside info, this came to mind. All of you are aware of accessorial charges etc. Like liftgate charges, handling freight charges, layovers, detention, redeliveries, etc.
The first thing I have to say about all of these is TO MY KNOWELDGE all companies charge these. ALSO! No company charges the same, and in the same way. Every company is different, but certain things about these remain the same, so amounts and times may not apply to your company.
But, What I have to say about it is, you need to never let your dispatch tell you that a load is not going to pay any accessorial charges when you are required to work them. For example, If you know that your company usually charges detention after 2 hours of waiting... then you need to be getting it after 2 hours. Because the customer will pay them for it reguardless of any circumstances. All they have to do is call the customer and inform them ahead of time the reason of delay at shipper/consignee, and its basically approved, but billing will handle the invoicing later. Now, the real inside info on this is that a carrier never bids on a load that needs accessorials like liftgates without getting paid for them. Every situation is different, they might do it because you have been sitting... but dont let them not pay you for the use of your extra equipment. NEVER take a load without that pay. Because in the long run, that customer would still have to pay it with another carrier anyway.
If you have anything to add to that or questions just let me know.
BTW for my company detention usually starts after 2 hours @ 65/hr. 50/hr to the driver
liftgate is $300 and 250 to the driver
layover is $300 250 to the driver
Redelivery is $150 100 to the driver (obviously depending on situation)
Added stopoff is 150 and 100 to the driver (obviously depending on situation.)
Now none of our rates are the same with every customer either. Some get it cheaper, some get it more expensive. For the sake of keeping things peaceful, I will not tell you who gets it more expensive.
