There is a provision in the lease that says cars using electronic tolling cannot see their rates go up until 2017. After 2016 the rates for cars could skyrocket, depending on the new owners. The current rate for electronic tolls is $4.65, versus cash of $10 for the full trip. Beginning in 2017 they could remove the cash discount altogether and it'll be $10. Except with the 3 percent guaranteed annual increase they get that $10 will become $10.90.
Between Toledo and Gary, dropping down 24 to 30 through Ft Wayne is just 17 miles longer, but with an additional 45 minutes, give or take. For cars, vans, Sprinters and Sprinter wannabes, swapping 45 minutes to save $4.65 might not be worth it. For me, anyway, in most cases, it would be for $10-plus (even though the carrier reimburses tolls). For a truck at $38.70, I'd be seeing a lot of Ft Wayne, I think. It would depend on weather and road conditions, and whether or not I had the hour to spare.
