I suspect the political elites like the pageantry of huge ceremonies. It's a nod to vanity and narcissism. Why not have a modest ceremony? Must every inaugural be bigger and more grand than the one before?

The oath of office should be public and small. The idea of spending millions on parties when we have MASSIVE deficits and debt is criminal.

I believe the inaugural festivities are privately funded through corporate sponorship and personal donations.

What about the security for those parties? DC Police? Secret Service? I know the parties themselves are private bribes but the rest we pay for.
