In-Cab Fever!

Ok, here we are. It's Saturday morning. We didn't get a last minute Friday run, again. Looks like we're stuck at the Petro in Baton Rouge for the weekend. Chances are that we won't catch a run until Monday.

Food is decent, at least, but getting old.

The Petro store carries all the same crap all the other truck stop stores carry. Not interested.

All showered up, and laundry is done.

Hmmm, guess I could go into the driver theater and watch whatever they have preprogrammed - Ah, No.

Never been to Baton Rouge before. Wonder what there is to do here? Maybe there's a State Park or some other historical site to visit - yeah, but they likely aren't truck friendly.

Guess, I could rent a car and go somewhere, but where?

I know you have all been here. What strategies have you come up with to cure In-Cab Fever? You know, so you're not stuck in the truck sniffing diesel exhaust, listening to the ever rumbling idling engine, and getting fat.

I'm posting this from another thread, maybe this book Cheri is referring to has something for you to do in Baton Rouge!

Shawn, the best advice I can give is to take yourself to a bookstore, and get a copy of "1000 places to see in America & Canada before you die". Besides all the expected places, you'll find descriptions of interesting things (the annual Duck Calling Contest, in Arkansas, a Kite Festival on Padre Island), and my favorite: little places to eat that you'd drive right past, otherwise. Prices and phone numbers are listed, so you know what to expect.
I read this book with a highlighter in hand, always.:)

We usually stay pretty busy when we have a weekend such as yours. Bob will stay busy on the outside of the truck checking the motor, tires, oil, and then shining everything. I usually stay busy in the inside of the truck by cleaning, reading, continuing education, or even a sewing project. We have the perfect jobs to continue our education and there is never enough time in a day to read all of the books on my list.

We're still sitting here in Fargo, ND on a Sat. morning. Today is laundry, shower, Walmart run, vacuum the truck, clean windows again (our 3rd driver keeps leaving nose prints on them) day. We were real slugs yesterday while the wind was howling and the rain was falling..just sat and watched movies and read.

Just Google "things to do in Baton Rouge" and all kinds of stuff come up.The one that got my interest was the tour of the U.S.S. Kidd a Fletcher class destroyer from WW II,which everyone rated as excellent.

We took the time to tour the U.S.S. Alabama while on layover in Mobile,AL once and it was awesome.Just be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.DD.

That book sounds like a neat thing to have. We recently went to Barnes and Noble and purchased some flashcards and a learning system used on the computer with study lessons to learn another language. Thought it would be interesting. Also, we listen to music, read, play games, go for a walk. I need to do laundry, but I think everyone else at the truck stop does also, so maybe late tonight.

Stinks, doesn't it?? Every time something 'big' happens to the truck, I'm the one driving! That's one turbo, an air bag, and two, countem' TWO front tires!!! Ya know, that air bag blow out sounds just like a tire blowing but doesn't give the same thrill!!!

I knew that the license plate went with the light Mare! I only lost the plate once and just about lost it a second time until I made that Aluminium backing plate which by the way I offered it to DD and the offer is still good.

Our favorite time occupier when caught waiting on a run over the weekend is finding a state park with hook ups and camp out, in Texas you can fish from the shore without a fishing lic. according to the park rangers, Lake Corpus Cristi state park is nice...I managed to catch a 20# blue cat there.

Mare don't forget to tell how great you are as a deer hunter! you're up to two now..right?

No matter what you end up doing... you just have to make something happen or you'll just end up being bored and bummed out all the time, and by the way...you'll get more load offers if you're doing something besides waiting on that load offer too!

also most of the state parks offer showers too, I just look for the closest state park then google it which usualy yeilds location/ph.# & amenities

Have fun out there!

I Found A Cure!

First, we took a short trip down a 30 mi. bridge over the bayous. Drive alone was cool, just watching for herins fishing and seeing the sights.

The we got off, right there in St. Bernard's Parrish! You can still see the damage that the hurricane left there. One house rebuilt, while the next 5 look vacant - sad. :(

Then we parked at the Wal-Mart on Tchop(couple more syllables/constanants)las Street. I wouldn't suggest it for a big truck, but a 6 wheeler can make it if you park way in the back. There was a bus right across the street from the Wal-Mart that cost $1.50 a head and took us 2 blocks from Bourbon Street!

We walked around and listened to Jazz, Blues and Rock 'n' Roll! We grabbed a bite to eat of some of the local fare. We had Jumbolaya (sp?), Gumbo, Red Beans 'n' Rice, Fried Crawfish and some kinda drink called a Hurricane! Never thought I would like fried crawfish, but yum, yum!

Then we walked around some more! Everybody we met along the way was so friendly, and helpful in getting us from point A-to-point B.

All-in-all we had a fantastic time! We can't wait for our next layover in Baton Rouge! I wanna do it a gain!
