Actually Phil that is only part of the story, a correct summation could be;

Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

See the good thing is that Ubuntu is supported by rich guy, Mark Shuttleworth who believes in the same thing many of us, Open source should not be a commercial venture but open and free. He has laid down the rules and has provided money to achieve a OS that works. The project looked at all the different types of Linux distributions and made sure that they don’t follow other’s mistakes. A few of the others have either commercial purposes or lack in proper project management that causes the OS not to be the best.
