Yes and they both need reformed but there's a whole lot of difference between helping our seniors (that need it) and the poor (those that honestly can't help themselves) and mandating government care for all.

But see Diva helping is one thing, entitling them is another. One they breeched that fine line from help to entitlement in 1965, we were screwed.
There is some who need help but a lot of them don't. I still get to see the amazing fact of life here in Detroit - auto workers on welfare driving vehicles that cost more than I make. I can't understand first why they are not caught and then why they are not going to jail.
Social Security is a mess, I would rather have the option to take my retirement out of the system but that won't ever happen. Instead I would compromise, let me put in what ever amount I want into a retire program that is simple and completely tax free while they wind the system down. When my turn comes, no mandated medicare or social security but rather my investments which are completely tax free. The system is paid for, the system ends and we are free again.

I agree Greg. A lot of changes need to be made. Maybe a gradual phasing out over a period of years. I've also thought the same about unemployment which is also now out of control. You read stories about some...I said some...that play both ends of that against the middle, either work "under the table" while collecting or refuse lower paying work until the benefits run out. If the government would put that on a phase out schedule instead of just handing more and more full benefits to the unemployed they just might find out what kind of work some folks will do when given no choice.

Why does a person who is on welfare with one child, who gets a job, and still gets welfare, then loses the job because she took too many days off entitled to unemployment too. We know this lady who has been getting every extension since 2006, four years, with her full welfare.
NOW she is getting her schooled paid for and starts in January. BUT it isn't just getting school paid for, they are giving her a transportation allowance, paying for all books and materials, and have given her some bizarre deal for the next two years she will get her unemployment too.
I wouldn't complain about any of it if she was going for something useful but she isn't. The state has the approval list, which includes what she is going for - you sitting down? - Massage Therapist.
I can't see that as a job for the future.

I think everyone should stop jumping on the media band wagon. We don't know the whole story. There could be many (valid) reasons as to why this happened. People should know that things are just not as bad as some would have you think.
The medical practitioners here are ALL about people's rights, first of all. Secondly they're very aware of liability issues and covering their butts, in both directions, so to speak.
You will notice they cut the guy's legs off prior to this event. If they felt that because he was old (88?), or because he was incurable, or because he was a vet, or because he was just plain butt ugly, they weren't going to perform heroic measures to save him should an event occur which would bring death, then they wouldn't have bothered going to the expense of cutting his legs off either.
I can think of some reasons off the top of my head why the doctors may have done this. It's sad sad sad when a loved one's time is up. Unfortunately sometimes people have to face this.
Like everything else, let's wait until the whole story comes out, or it gets decided by a jury in the courts, or at least until we get an impartial report before we go crazy about the unfairness of it all. Right now, the entire story is based on the daughter's perspective only. It's not like they killed the guy, they just didn't utilize their scientific technological capabilities to help him survive another event. For all we know, it could've been the 10th one that day.
I trust NO government, US, Canadian or Russian. Our governments DO NOT trust us and, not only do they ignore what we tell them we want or don't want, they often feel the need to force their ideas on us. There is NO WAY that I believe that 537 people, most of whom are NOT the sharpest tacks in the box, can RULE me. I, and ONLY I, have the RIGHT to control my life. ANY medical decision should ONLY be between my doctor and my self. PERIOD. My wife knows my wishes. The government needs to go away. It is in NO WAY any of their business.
Pjj you are correct..there must be more to this on the surface....I hope there is...Doctors know they'll be sued out the kazoo...they must have thought they were covered to let this happen....
