Ideas, anyone?

When securing a single 55 gal drum I use 4 load bars, 2 logistic sleeves and 3 straps. One bar in front, one in back with the sleeves, one strap on the sleeves and 2 straps crisscrossing high to low on the drum.

I'm confused: where does the [Etrack] strap connect?

E-Track Strap? I thought you were Talking about the E-Track Load Bars! The Fabric on the Load Bars would Wrap Just Around the Bar and Leave the E-Track Mechanisms Exposed so I Could Work them.

Wow maybe I should start selling the sleeves I got, I think I have 60 of them out of GM's scrap bin.

You do know someone actually makes a strap that goes around the drums like the tire straps mentioned?

I got a few in 2008 but someone walked off with those and my cinch straps. I got to find the link but it was some little company in Wyoming that makes them and sells them though this internet thing.

Rlent, thanks for reminding me about the surplus center, I was just there Friday and forgot to buy a few of them. I guess next trip and if you go there, have a small truck.

I was talking about load bars - the sleeves slide over them, allowing straps to be run back to front, or around freight between bars - just gives you more options than bars & straps.

:D

I called Lodi Metals, and according to the salesperson, the sleeves cost "around $12.00 each" - wondering why the price difference, when New Haven charges thirtysomething each?
Interestingly, I just called them ..... and the guy I got told me they really no longer sell them ...... as they believe they might be patented ....

He did say however that they may have a few left if I wasn't looking for a large quantity .... waiting for a call back right now with pricing and availability ...

I'll find out when I get there, I guess, cause Lodi is where I'm goin, next time I go home. :)
You might wanna just call and order them and have them shipped to the house .... before they get cleaned out by some scoundrel like me .... :p

The sales fellow from Lodi Metals just called back - they are declining to sell them - it appears that there is some sort of issue (patents or whatever)

Guess we got different salespeople, eh? It's not what I wanted to hear, but I'm not gonna shoot the messenger - because you saved me a trip. And because you didn't get any either, lol. :p
It's not a 'need right away' thing, just one more on my list - I'll get some one of these days.
And now, on my way to Chicago, via KC.

Yeah - that's why I posted it - didn't want ya (or anybody else) to waste the fuel.

Heheheh ... :p

I'm considering just making my own - I got some chunks of left-over E-track up in the shed ..... shouldn't be too hard to weld something up ....

Probably won't be pretty ..... but if it works, what the hey ... the price will be right anyways.

And now, on my way to Chicago, via KC.
I'll be there (Wood Dale) some time tomorrow .... located a right front door for the Sprinter (where the wife backed into it) ..... guy has a bunch of interesting stuff ..... might pick up some spares ;)

UPDATE: Day before yesterday I got a call from John Tate at Lodi Metals and he informed me that they had done some checking, had located an entire crate of logistics sleeves, and had determined that they had originally purchased them prior to any patent issue, and so consequently determined that there would be no problem selling their remaining inventory. Cost is $12.

I placed an order at that time and the sleeves arrived today via UPS.

Patent issue?

I looked for a patent application and found nothing.

I wonder if the ones I have that were made in 90's are from the guy who is patenting it.

While on the subject, I have been trying to come up with a better way to secure a 55 gal. drum on a skid in my van. .

I have yet to haul a 55 gal drum, but I've been thinking about how I'd do it. Thing is, I don't have E-track; I just have the built-in securement that comes standard in a Chevy Express.

So I was thinking of using 3 straps, each one hooked on one end, wrapped around the drum in the middle, and then hooked to another securement area on the other side. One strap high, one low, and one in the middle. I have a few skinnier straps, but I'd use my one thick strap in the middle.

Anybody think that wouldn't work? It's 6 securement points.

Hey greg,

All I can tell ya is what the guy told me a week or so ago when I called .... he sounded fairly unsure (very guarded) about selling any load sleeves initially when I called the first time .... he actually excused himself to ask the sales manager about it and then came back with the patent story thing ....

Was almost like the thought I wasn't a real customer but someone trying to find out, for other reasons, if they were selling them ....

I wonder if the ones I have that were made in 90's are from the guy who is patenting it.
No clue .....

I have someone else looking into it. It is not new but then again patents are funny creatures.

AMonger, I don't know about others but you really need to secure the drum with more than factory tie points and small straps.

You do the math, 55 gallons by 8.35 lbs for water based solutions 460 lbs plus the empty drum weight) to 55 gallons by 11 lbs for some epoxy resins (615 lbs plus the empty drum weight).

It is a serious issue when one is loose in a van or even a truck.

With every drum there is a head space and this allows the liquid to move. If you are hauling three or four drums, then you can feel the liquid move the van while you are driving.

If you survive slamming on your brakes hard, then you still have the accident type issues to deal with, mainly cleaning it up - espeically if the drum contents can't be contained with in the van (which by the way the van can be deemed scrap if it is containted). That can cost a lot of money to clean the enviornment depending on what is in the drums and your insurance may not cover it and you will be liable for the clean up.

My advice - get l track or etrack installed and learn how to make sure the drums don't move.

Yea, to you maybe but there are hundreds of thousands of kids out there that understand it is correct under the new math programs in the school - all answers are correct, the effort is what matters:p

just take a quilted blanket and put over the bar.The cargo blanket has many uses, protecting the freight from the bar is just one of many

You should install E-track not only for the securement of drums, but for all freight.

What type of securement comes standard in a Chevy Express?

why didn't you just put the cargo bar in front then just strap the drum to the wall, putting the front of the strap ahead of the bar?
