First off you need to figure up what you cost per mile is. OOIDA has a spreadsheet on their web site to help with that. I'm not sure what the addy is though. Next you need to figure out what the average pay is. Then subtract your cost per mile (cpm) from the average pay per mile. If the average pay is more than the cost per mile you will be turning a profit. the bad thing about it is the only way to really tell if they can keep you busy or not is to get out there and do it, but if your costs are going to be more than the average pay you won't be making any money regardless of how busy they keep you.

the company i worled for said i could make 600 bucks a week. they paid it during the first 4 weeks but after that it was what i could run. never made the money. guess if you run more than 12 hrs a day and weekends you can do it. i was in a car doing docs and only once had boxes to deliver. i think every recruiter says....'we have all the work you can take'....then says.....'we were busy but it got slow'

Yes i did work for a local courier. I would have to ask just what the 65% works out to per mile. If its 65% of 80 cents wouldnt pay much. I just had a hard time making any money working local and if i took runs out of town it was always deadheading home. Cost to much money to always deadhead

thanks for your feed back,i guess the thing to do is just try it,the only thing is, i would have to wait till the 3rd week to get paid, they say they will give gas coupons till then, does this sound familiar to anyone?how i am looking at this is, if ic drivers are not making money then these companys wouldnt be in bussiness,or am i wrong?

There is some reading involved on this to explain how to use the spreadsheet and it defines what various things are. After reading on the bottom there are a couple links to spreadsheets based on what type of system you have. That will give you an idea of what it will cost you to run. Then compare that to what you will be making. Cost Per Mile Worksheet

About the pay situation. There are a few expedite companies that do the hold out as well for various reasons. That's another reason why it is important to have a fund to run on until you get paid. Plus you will want to have some money set back in case your truck breaks down.

You are right, the 'companies' are making money, or they wouldn't be in business. That's a different story than whether the 'ICs' are making money. My 3-cents is if the companies had to pay the actual operating expenses of the ICs, they would NOT be in business! Especially if they kept up their practice of overhiring. Talk to some of the drivers before you commit!

I would have to wonder why you have to wait three weeks to get paid. I worked for two local companies in Columbus Ohio before I started with Roberts Express several years ago and never had to wait past the second week.

You can go broke real fast waiting that long to find out there might be a problem with your pay. Also if they are going to (LOAN) you gas coupons until your first pay, then I would believe you might not see any money for more than a month because you can bet your boots the company is going to take the money back for the coupons out before you get any settlement.
