If you take this route be prepared to be stuck behind the leaf gawkers - this is prime leaf season in the Smokies and a good time to stay away from the area unless you've got plenty of time to poke along with the tourists. The best alternate route going eastbound is I-81 to I-26 which will take you to Asheville. A few more miles but not much difference in the drive time on the more curvy I-40.
