Rockslide Closes Interstate 40 Near N.C.-Tenn. Border

Passage Could Be Closed for Months, Officials Say

A weekend rockslide has closed Interstate 40 in western North Carolina near the Tennessee state line, and officials said it could take several months to clear the debris, the Associated Press reported.
Motorists traveling west to Tennessee should take I-40 West to I-240 West in Asheville to I-26 West. Follow I-26 West from Asheville to I-81 South in Tennessee, back to I-40. Eastbound motorists should follow the reverse directions, AP reported, citing state officials.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation issued an emergency declaration Sunday, and initial estimates from engineers were that it could take up to “several months” to clean up the entire slide and restore normal traffic, AP said.
DOT said a contractor is en route to begin the cleanup, AP reported. The rockslide occurred over the weekend near mile marker 3 in Haywood County, N.C. There were no reports of injuries.

This is going to add several miles to a reroute.

Let's hope that our carriers are aware of this mess and factor the additional miles and time into our pay and travel times.

I am not surpized about FedEx, I threw that in just as a thought for others in case their carriers might need a little help with this.

Do they have a detour set up or are you on your own?
I don't see a good way without a lot of extra miles and time.

Just as long as carriers recognize this and pay for the extra miles and allow for the extra time taken for the detour.

The detour looked to me to add about 60 miles onto your trip. The detour is spelled out in the Transport Topics post.

GPS411.net has reprogrammed their system to route around the rockfall... don't have the routing details yet, just an email from them, but any company subscribed to them for routing will have the detour automatically in their system.
Stu says the detour will remain in the system until the highway is officially open again.

Regards.
