I Am Shocked...

Spoke to an E-1 driver at the S. Tryon Wal-Mart Monday. No unit number, gray Ford van, with TN tag. The shocking part? He said he didn't know OVM!!! How can that be?

It's surprising to learn how many expediters are out here who have never heard of EO.

OVM is just a persona that Doug Travels invented to trick us all into believing that there is a short Irish dude from Canada driving around an in an E-1 sprinter with weird shorts on. He is just a figment of your EO imaginations!!

Man, that's the truth. It's a significant majority percentage from what I've seen. You'd think at this point the carriers, particularly the ones who advertise here, would be mentioning it in orientation or something. Lawrence needs to make some phone calls.

EO? Never heard of it. Has to be a myth. Is that like the jackalope, the moon landing, or an NLM load that is easy to deal with?

From talking to people out on the road, I'd say more have no idea what EO is then do....

I agree..my experience has been that far less than 50% of current expediters have heard of EO.. In addition, I suspect many of these people are not even computer literate. I don't know if anyone else has noticed it but I detect the expedite driver pool has recently been infiltrated by, shall we say, an element of unsavory, un-sociable, and un-savvy mentality..It's sad and a little disturbing.

I have not noticed but am interested to hear what you base your observation on. There have always been some expediters that are as you describe but as a group they seem to be savvy, sociable, etc. What changes have you noticed exactly?

I would have thought that the "legend of the shorts" would have been spread throughout the land.

A lot of depends on where you look. It's not as prevalent in the big and straight truck world, even those who drive for fleet owners. It's nearly non-existent with those who own their own trucks. But unsavory, un-sociable, and un-savvy is ubiquitous with van drivers, and is nearly a 100 percent lock for those who don't own their own van. Low risk brings low rent.

i would have to agrree with turtle. van and sprinter drivers are a group of people that i have found to be of lower quality in the last 2 years. i USE to go out of my way to meet cv/sprinter expediters.
i felt they were of higher standards than semi drivers.
lately i have run into some real winners out there.

Maybe this would help -- bumper stickers on our trucks that say "Do not read ExpeditersOnline.com. Info there your carrier does not want you to know."

I've been doing this for a dozen years now and the "less than savory" types have been here at least that long. I agree that they can be most commonly found as drivers in a fleet owner's van. Like the guy I talked to at the Detroiter about 10 years ago. He was heading to the Speedway gas station for the cheap hot dogs because that's all the money he had in his pocket. I don't know why someone in that situation would be out on the road.

I'll admit that, while not unsocial, I don't randomly seek out fellow expediters to chat with much anymore. There's been too many times that after about a minute I think to myself, "this guy's an idiot, I gotta get outa here."
