Driving too fast for the conditions looks like the major culprit. Just curious, after viewing the chain reaction video, what other drivers would do given the same conditions. I'm talking about driving in extremely slick conditions with very limited visibility. What would drivers in this forum do? Drive with lights on, hazards blinking, in the right hand lane at 20 mph? Just curious.

One always should drive with lights on in other than perfect weather. When it gets slick, I get off the road as soon as it is possible.

I watched a few videos of the wrecks in Michigan. I asked myself at first ....why are these idiots on the road during those conditions? Then I saw that it was pockets of Lake Effect snow. They might have been driving in fairly clear weather until they suddenly hit the wall of snow, and it was too late to react? I have experienced situations like that up in the Syracuse area a few times.

I drove that stretch 2 days before and can tell you south of lake MI can get deadly quickly. It was beautiful out, but wind was blowing dusty snow all over. Over the ice that had not melted due to temperatures. That stuff blows up quick.

Down wind of all the Great Lakes can get deadly quick. Lake effect snow squalls come out of no where. How ever, the causes are very well known and, for the most part, these events are fairly well predicted.

People tailgate too much, all the time, regardless of the weather. It's bad enough when the weather is good, when tailgating is taking place and a squall hits, there is no chance.

The best protection is to stop tailgating and give yourself a chance. Keep driving as so many do out there and you have little.
