When one is talking hurricanes/tornados...and the unexpected I don't think hysteria can exist....better to err on the safe play....I'd prefer an overreaction then minimum reaction so we never have another Katrina situation....
Well you know it is funny that there is a melding of two different issues and using the base of the argument on a subject that has nothing to do with proper preparedness.
Think about it this way, it isn't about the people who are in harms way, they already know what's going on and pretty much can't watch the weather channel or all of the news outlets while dealing with the storm. They do know the weather is going to get bad, in many cases are leaving their homes and belongings to escape the storm but ...
The problem is the sensationalizing for ratings that is going on which is the wall to wall coverage tied to the fact that NYC is in the path which enhances the need to 'report' on the storm. No one cares if the outer banks are hit, that happens all the time but <<GASP>> NYC is so important that anything that can happen is too important to just say "Irene may hit Manhattan" and leave it at that but have to go into great detail with minute by minute coverage of every foot the storm moves.
Now with that said, Katrina the storm wasn't the problem, it was Katrina the government disaster that was. The ineffective government of Lousiana and the city of N.O. had no one to blame but themselves for what happened and they have not ever held the mayor or anyone in their government accountable but blamed everyone else. IT is a different subject and different situation altogether.
