Make sure you have a bank full of money. The start up money is the easy part,your going to have to have enough money to operate your truck and pay your house hold bills for at least 2 months.Paying parties have 21 days to pay their bills,and some take even longer.If you use the companies that will buy your freight bills you may as well just run for a company.Unless you have time to find your own loads,by the time you pay broker fees,and a company to buy your freight bills so your paid right away,your net income frpm the load,you may as well just leased to a good trucking company.
Another thought that scares me about getting your own authority is the amount of brokers filing bankruptcy. You and your bill will be on the bottom of the list to get paid. I would think you would need a large emergency fund to get you started and a few of your own customers so you would not solely be relying on brokers for your income.

Before coming onto Robert Express,I ran my own authority,yes it was a little different back then,but if I didnt have a cash fund in the bank,I couldnt have survived.Most of my loads I set up C O D,and those were my produce loads.The loads obtained from property brokers,were the non excempt loads,and may times took months to get paid for them.To really make it,you need to be able to obtain your own loads,no brokers.Why give up any money if your going to be on your own.I suggest you find a customer ner your home that has a delivery every week from a specific area.This will make your life much easier,cause then you only need to find a way to get to that area.If your really lucky,that load that comes home will pay enough,that in case you have to, you could dead head to pick that load up, or at least get a broker load to the area.Your best pay will be LTL freight,it will take longer to load and unload,but by the mile will pay the best.For this you will need to rely on a broker.Just a couple thoughts,good luck,you will need it
I was going to say.. if you don't have the ambition, resources, energy, mental wherewithal, whatever it takes, to fully investigate what exactly you need to do to pursue what you want, other than to ask a simple question on a public forum comprised mostly of people who are not even in the business of doing so themselves, good luck to you in performing the rest of the tasks you will need to undertake once you GET your own authority.

Who is to say that this one simple question isn't just the very beginning of a long and exhaustive investigation into getting one's own authority? I mean, ya gotta start somewhere. If you're interested in finding out about how to get your own authority, I dunno, but I gotta figure such a simple question probably ought to be asked at some point. I find it very hard to believe that those who have their own authority managed to get it without learning how to get it.
