This is our first year in the business. I understood the 1st Quarter was going to be light. I expected the freight to pick up late March, but it seems this year is not as strong as previous years. I'm trying to determine if it's just the carrier (who shall emain namesles) I am leased to or if the issue is industry wide.
I would really appreciate your feedback.

Thank you.

Having seen our numbers and talking with a few drivers from competitors, IT'S SLOW!!

Most companies seem to be suffering from a lack of work. There seems to be a general slowdown even though the economy is doing ok.

we just lost a large client to a small hotshot type company and their rates are c#%p. Eg: run I was doing for .875/mile their guys are doing for .65/mile, run I did for 1.45/mile their doing for under .92/mile. Other runs similar with the best I had for 1.87/mile their doing for a high of 1.2/mile. These guys are not charging any extras, weight, waiting time, hand bomb, nothing.

So it goes, slow periods come and go. Many companies have too many o/o out there and there is not enough freight to keep us all happy and busy.

Thanks FIS this is EXACTLY what is happening. My company says everytime I call in (we have a bid on you sit tight) only to not recieve the call later.

If your running fine now I am happy for ya, but I am telling ya if the economy does not improve your gona be just like me in sitting, callling, waiting.

I truley believe I am with one of the BEST COMPANIES in Expediting, my past #s prove it. But with some of the big guys (little ones to) giving loads away its gona affect us all. My #s overall seem healty, but sitting for days on end with no loads is only costing me $ in lost revenue when I could be doing something else (like earning $ maybee).

A working Man (Woman) is a happy Man. Plain and simple if your not working your not earning, if you enjoy paying bills on time and saving some extra what more can I say?

This has been discussed in other threads, but the edge certainly goes to the larger carriers when things slow down.
Why? Because they have numerous inhouse accounts that they use that the small carriers have no access. Unless of course the bigger companies broker it out because of lack of equipment, or it goes to a poor location.
A company bidding on alot of loads are in direct competition with every other carrier, thus driving the freight rate down or keeping it very competitive.
The large carriers have to be careful they don't over populate, or misery will spread to their operation. Many times the carrier may think they are not covering enough loads, but it is a matter of whether they are not covering enough profitable loads. And when I say profitable, I mean to both the driver and the carrier, not just one.

Our number are much better for the 1st quarter, then they were last year and we have been home more due to things beyond our control. I also know that we have been lucky in some areas. Like LA, Ca., Sat 24 hours then a load back to Ill. ME we delivered at 00:30 and got a load to Jacksonville Fl. @ 10:00. and we got right out of Jacksonville. A load to Miami and right back out of there to NC. We must be holding our mouth right or something. Although I prefer to believe in the power of Prayer. Thank-you Lord. I also feel that we are on a great team at Panther. Thank-you Team you are the Best. I am concerned with the mexico freight and the Mexican drivers coming into the US. This could take a big chunk out to our industry. ;)

Hi

Im noticing a lot of flat beds running up and down the road.So hopefully after they get the raw materials and home framing materials delivered then smaller lighter items will start to move.Another good indicator is how many bobtails you see.

We are not the only ones who are slow. The neighbor who drives a coal bucket (28' dump trailor) is only running 3 days per week instead of 5 and the reefer driver I know is running at 50%.

I think the expedited load gods are on vacation.

Actually, the larger Carriers DON'T have more, or, less access to the freight in this country. Jes depends if you want to make (and keep) the promises required to get in bed with some of them. Appears a lot of the frustration I read on here is caused by the promises made, that causes others to keep.

One of the keys to this business, is to diversify. Haul the flatbed stuff in, and, the hot stuff out.
