We are running now with a tractor trailer average 4500-5500 miles per week and not making 1000$ clean. Can we make this amount for example if we are running with a straight truck for somebody. We are husband and wife. Any answer would be apreciatte .

You should make more with a T/T than you would with a straight truck. There is more availability of freight out there for tractors, and company revenue is higher on a tractor.

Because of the miles, owners feel that they can getaway withpying you less than they canwith a straight truck. If you are running a combination of expedite and LTL, then you should do better in the tractor as a team. You may want to reconsider hpw the owner pays you.

With a straight truck, most owners pay a percentage of the revenue and with a tractor, they pay per mile. So, I would sure get hold of the owner and work out a different deal.

Our S/T teams are averaging $1200+, each driver, per week, (when they are running.

When they are running. That statement is the key. $1200 a week per driver LOL. How many weeks are they making that type of money out of say, 3 months during the busy season and 3 months during slow times. Expedite = lots of wasted time sitting around.x(

When is slow season is slow even for the big companies we have to take short loads ,300-700 miles than wait to reload.Wait, means 8-24 hours.
The difference is you have to drive more to make that amount specialy if the truck is not running more than 65miles/hour.And if you have to drive those miles Chicago or NY area you wish better to be paid by the hour not by the miles. So my point is with the straight you drive less but you make the same or more, right??
thanks for all the reply

Should have clarified, when they are in the truck, and not at the house for some reason.

I'm new around here, but am an O/O of a S/T. Maybe I'm crazy, and I admit I don't have any knowledge of TT units, but 4500 miles a week and a husband and wife team are not clearing $1000??? That's about 22 cents a mile. Am I missing something here? I suggest you follow the advice given by the more experienced people here and find a new/better O/O to drive for, because your situation doesn't seem to come even close to the norm. Good luck.

No Larry, You just have to be in the truck a little bit.

It wasn't for lack of us being in the truck. Simple fact of the matter is, when the runs pay nothing, the drivers make nothing.

Unless it takes you to a better freight area, I would see little reason to run it. Way too expensive out here to be running around for free.

TENHAWK, as I remember, I ran with both you and your neff for better than half the whole big month you were here. YOU were in the machine maybe 11 - 12 days. The truck did a meager 24K that month (was it July)and ran somewhere 13k miles. Now, if you weren't happy with your situation, you could have renegotiated your situation, instead of pouting, leaving the truck in a K-Mart parking lot and riding a rental car home. If you choose to continue this pi$$in contest i'll be happy to pull the old logs and revenue sheets out and finish it. No problem.
