Giddy Up EXpress..:)

All joking aside is it the industry that changed so much or is it our lifestyle that makes this job so difficult at times/keeping us from getting ahead at times. No doubt as a whole we are wastefull society and it is costing us.
At times it seems like 1 step forward and then 2 back-wards and its happening all the time..2 good weeks then nothing for another week setting ya back to ground zero again playing catch up.
Something had to be different way back when..I cant image trying or wanting to build a fleet of anymore then 2 or 3 trucks today.

Some truck stops had rooms. Many Union 76 truck stops had small rooms with a black and white TV and a twin bed. A common bathroom with showers was down the hall. All of this for under $10 a night.

Moot I remember those Rooms. The Old TA in Perrysburgs had rooms upstairs you could get really cheap.

Judging by the last few months of drive bys the Detroiter is coming back to life..Allmost any given day lately there is 10 to 20 some vans on layover there.
Where are they parking? Last time I was at the Detroiter, IHOP didn't want vans parking in front.

Murray seen em to..LOL
They been sitting over there a good part of the summer. They been overnighting there for a long time then I believe early summer the homeland security over there was booting em out after daylight broke. Seems now noone is bothering them at all for the last few months. Maybe someone realized there was money in them vans..
11 wide right now as we speak..
Including 1 yellow one.

Slid over here next door to the Detroiter and Ill sell ya some gun raffle tickets..They will make good stocking stuffers. Someone says I gotta sit here for bout 9 more hours so Ill be here for a bit..Gots a scale house between here and the house and I dont feel lucky today.

I remember the good old QUALCOMM pagers. Would go to a WalMart and point the van towards the store , send the wife in and send a test message and see if it set the pager off. If it didn't only one of us would shop. Anyone else used this procedure? We also used it at other various spots.

Before that we had Radio Shack. They had lots more range than QC. Autopage also had one with better range.

Before QC we had to call dispatch every 4 hours to report our position. That was interesting trying to find a pay phone in the Chicago Ghetto.

How many miles a week did you run back then? How many per year?
Were there any coast to coast runs?
Weren't most of the runs automotive?
Any loads to Laredo?
I was under the impression that most of the loads were short (200-300 miles) into and out of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

Most automotive, but I lived on "Auto Alley" (I -75")
Coast to Coast very rare in a van. Laredo? no. Mi wk and yr same as today. 75% of loads were to Detroit and return.

A mileage report is where you had to write your mileage down at the start of your trip then every time you crossed a state line you had to write it down. Then you ended it at your delivery. The driver then had to total up all the miles for each state and what routes you drove on, then send it in with each load you did. Crap 20 years ago huh I run for a truck from Texas they still have us filling out a DVIR every load we do.

Ahhh the QC pager. I still have mine in a box, along with some other vintage pagers. Maybe we should open an expediter museum :p
