How do u get started in this business?

Hi all, I've just learned of this site and am reading all I can to find out about expediting. I want to know how and what I need to do or get to be able to get started and make some money in this business. I have a Class A cdl with all the endorsements and the means to buy my own truck, but don't know which would be better to get into , a class c or d truck, which one would be the better money maker? I have driven straight trucks for about a year for a big chemical company loading and unloading hazmat, and I own an old 88 ex-U-Haul 22 footer which I've used to move cross country with 4 times. I have also driven OTR as a company team driver in semi-tractor trailer rig till my partner decided to quit. By the way, my driving with the big chemical company was back in 76 and 77 and didn't need a cdl to drive in their plant, so as far as certified driving experience goes, and my team driving career only lasted a month. I don't know if this will count if it is needed.I have since retired from the chemical plant with 30 yrs service, but am still fairly young, and going crazy in retirement. I think when I signed the retirement papers they said I was officially retired or retarded, lol , I don't really know which, I think maybe the last one. Any info on this from u all would be greatly appreciated, thank u in advance .

Ok if you want to get into this, I have a few pieces of advice.

First is read everything you can, most of your questions will most likely be answered here.

Second is take your time in finding a carrier, it matters, especially if you have the means to support yourself during your quest.

Third, think of driving for someone else, some what as a means to learn and to find out if you like it. This is not for everyone, believe me – as I sat for three days now, I have heard all kinds of complaints because it is slow. And if you drive for someone, get a contract (meaning get a lawyer involved) that will spell out who does what, when, who and who gets paid what for the runs. (I got a few horror stories to tell, but …) Oh if you do decide to driver for some one else, still use my second suggestion.

Fourth, read everything you can.

Most companies will not touch an ’88. You don’t need to buy new either, look around lots of trucks available from people who want to get out of this.

I just recently got into expediting also. I talked to several carriers before I bought my truck. They all pretty much agree that a Straight truck with a sleeper and a 22 to 24ft van body would give me the most flexibility. Most of them say they will not lease on a vehicle that is more than 5 years old but if you take it to them and let them inspect it they will lease it on if it is in good shape. I found a 98 Freightliner FL70 that had been repo'd by a bank. I got it below 9K. It runs great and has been accepted by the carrier I wanted to work for. I had to put new shocks and tires on the front end.

Jan. Feb and Mar. and July I'm told are the slow months for expediting. Some of the folks I've talked to actually just stay home in Feb. and some take Mar. off also.

Come to the Louisville MATS in March.EO is running the Expedite area where many of the expedite companys will have exhibits and personel to answer your questions. The dates are March 23 -25.

K's advice about the equipment is right on. Do your research and you'll find that there are some truck deals still out there if you look in the right spots. My advice is to be sure to work through a reputable dealer with a good reputation. A fly by night dealer that doesn't specialize in expediter trucks won't be there to support you if problems arise - and they also don't have a clue what an expediter NEEDS in a truck. Hi all, and thank you for the fast reponse to my post, sry I did'nt get back very fast , but I appreciate hearing from some experienced drivers or owner ops. I will take my time and look around at all the carriers, but with my experience I don't know if they would hire such a newbie at this, I guess the only way to tell is to talk with them and see.
