How do most companies figure mileage?

Do you check it under unusual circumstances? I was in St.Louis last week. Had a bid for a load going to Omaha. Fortunately, I didn't get it, because I remembered after hanging up that I-29 was closed in parts and I'd have to detour. I checked on the quoted miles, and they had quoted me and/or the customer miles without the detour.

I can think of one company that figures city center to city center. They NEVER supply zip codes. At least not to partner carriers.

We run on PC Miler Practical and it is automatic in our system. I find on average it is about 4-7% greater than short miles. So you always need to make sure when you quantify pay vs miles, are you talking short miles or practical miles????
