How did you quit?

Wow, that's like 8 1/2 cigarettes an hour
I know back in the day when I used to run coast to coast non-stop, the more tired I would become, the more I would smoke.Gum and jelly beans as well as pretzel rods work to keep my mind off of having a cigarette.

I smoked from age 9 til 58. 49 years. I quit because I knew I was in early stages of emphysema. I quit once before when I was about 32. That lasted about 4 weeks. Never tried again. I loved smoking. I have been quit now for a little over 2 years. The urge is gone, but, when I smell a cigarette out in the open, I think they still smell good. However, smoke inside or stale smoke, whew, stink. I am through with smoking for the rest of my life. I have no doubts I am over it now. My breathing is about normal, so I am lucky.

As to how I quit? I used Chantix (MyTimeToQuit). It uses a different approach to help you quit. I know several people who have quit with it. Only know of one who started back. There is also a support website you can use if you need. I didn't. I had enough desire to quit and Chantix took it from there. Well worth it to me.

Of all the people I know who have used Chantix, have said they had dreams (as I did), that were so life like. Not scary or violent, but just unreal as to how life like they were. They lasted the first 2 weeks or so. If nothing else, the dreams were worth the costs. Ha!

I feel the same way.

If you don't quite smoking you're gonna die. If you quite smoking, well, you're still gonna die, but you won't have spent as much along the way.

After 25 years of a pack and half aday, Cold turkey. When I would want one during the first couple of week I would look back at This

In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.

In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.

In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack
will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.

In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.

In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.

In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.

In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.

In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.

In 10 years your risk of lung cancer
will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker

I've Chewed up some toothpicks, Now I have to have my Straws, Dont leave little splinters.
Good luck to you when you find the right reason you will quit.

Cold turkey, but not on the first try. The first few days are the most difficult. All the toxins are out of your bloodstream in 72 hours. Then it`s habit that your fighting. You have to break the habit. Because we are all different, and have different methods of getting away from cigarettes, I can only say, "keep trying until it takes". One of the things that kept me trying to quit, was the feeling like, and being treated as a second class citizen. I got tired of being at a social occasion or party, or at work, and I`d be one of a few, or by myself having to step outside for a smoke, in all kinds of weather. I also got tired of laying down to sleep at night and hearing the wheeze, like there were two people breathing in my chest. It made me feel like a loser, not taking the bull by the horns and overcoming a habit that was harming my health, social life, and well being, and I didn`t like that. I quit a few times and went back, and then one time it took. That was 18 years ago.
I remember reading that all smokers gained weight, but somewhere somebody said, "break the habit first, then worry about working on the weight". I did gain some weight after quitting, but used that advice and lost it.
I hope all that want to can quit. It`s well worth it. Don`t give up.

Cold Turkey Day 2:

(No joke about hot turkey plates only, this time) I quit cold turkey March 15th, made it a week then relapsed. Dumb/weak me, the 1st 72-96 hours are the worst. Back at it about 30 hours now.

What really helped me the last time I quit when I would get a strong "need" for a cigarette was to take several really deep breaths. Slowly breathe in as much as I could, hold it for a couple seconds, then exhale. I kept doing that until the "need" passed. I chewed a lot of gum too. :)

Doug,
One last thing. Heart Attacks HURT really bad. Ex: Park your truck on your chest. I'm not kidding, the pain is terrible and doesn't let up for a LOOOONG time. Here is another one, you are spending a mortgage payment every month. My wife didn't quit smoking and to me she absolutely stinks. So much so that I now have my own bedroom and I must say I like it. I can make all the rude noises I want.

My father-in-law quit cold turkey after more than 40 years of 2-4 packs a day of un-filtered Camels. He did have a push when they found he had oral cancer. He died of lung cancer ten years latter. He neglected his follow up cancer examinations. My granddad quit after I threw 3 cartens of cigarettes into to coal stove in his kitchen. He and my grandmother were kinda argueing over his smoking and the cost etc. So, being an activist even at age 6, I threw them in the fire. The fight stopped, I got the razor strap to my young tender butt and my grandfather lived to 94. Layoutshooter

razor strap ouch!!!
