Sorry sir I am an owner, not a driver and don’t need to go to the DOT to justify my comments because I won’t force myself to drive in an unsafe vehicle. Be real. I got the ###### to make sure things are done right.

Maybe I didn’t put my thoughts in a form that would not be offensive to you to make my point but h*ll I am not a ‘perfect’ owner like some seem to be as much as I am no longer a good author. To me a lot of owners are cheap, very cheap and should not be in business but have been lucky in making money.

I do agree that many DOT personal are not warm and fuzzy people to deal with but really I can not see the fear that anyone would have when dealing with them unless the driver has something to hide if they are running legal – RIGHT?

I have seen a lot of cr*p where a contractor (in other industries also) who have been forced to do something unsafe because of their ignorance of the rules or no knowledge that they have the ability to say no without violating a contract.

I seen a lot of cr*p on the road that makes me feel there should be more inspections and more trucks taken off the road. I don’t mean that a truck that looks shabby but trucks that are obvious unsafe, broken or burned out lights, brake problems (barely can stop), hanging shocks, busted up fenders, no mud flaps, cracks in the windshield and so on. Some of these problems were on trucks from a few expediting companies, including the company I am contracted to. FYI my truck does not look like Phil’s truck, far from it but it is safe and just passed two inspections, one required and one just for fun.

This idea that a truck driver is a mechanic is ridiculous; thinking that everyone could do a road side/truck stop repair when they have no mechanical experience or can’t figure out the difference between a box wrench and a screwdriver is not right. I already had to deal with that when I employed people to drive cube trucks 20 years ago. I had to repair repairs and got sick of it. I stopped being cheap and stopped depending on an employee; I just got the thing fixed right with mechanics I trusted or did the work myself. I stressed safety with my employees then and I still stress safety today. Maybe it is my training and experience, maybe it is that I have been beaten up by lawyers about liabilities, maybe it is I am such a negative person that I look for problems first to make sure that nothing happens to others.

Unfortunately for some the CDL test is the only mechanical knowledge they get and getting a CDL does not mean that someone knows actually how to do a pre-trip/post-trip or even check the oil. The problems I think I see here is that a few expediters who are retired and have the RV mentality where they don’t have to or never had to do anything just let others worry about it. I have helped a few drivers who were not able to find a dip stick on a truck they have been driving for a while for God’s sake. What I mean is once the test is over and done with; it seems that some drivers forget everything.

My message was not clear so here I try again; if a driver has no other way to deal with an owner who demands driving an unsafe truck, get someone of an authority involved. I stand by my comment that it is far better to deal with an authority with a fine or a lecture then to be sick, hurt or dead.

After reading this post for the last few days On the Husband and wife team that thinks that I put safety 1st before a load. Well here is the TRUTH!!!

This Truck was picked up at FYDA Freightliner in Youngstown Ohio after the Motor was replaced and drove back to Akron where this husband and wife team that lives in my other house in Akron. They got a load from Cleveland, Oh to Detroit, MI. They called me and told me they was in Toldeo, Ohio and the truck smelled like it has a leak the pipes of the truck. I told them to take it to the Petro off of 280 since they just got off the toll road. They went their and they couldn't fix it so I told them to go to the Freightliner dealer in Toldeo to see if they could put a clamp on the pipe. On the way to the Dealer the ran over something in the road and the pipe came off the truck. So Now the truck is sitting in front of the Freightliner dealer with the pipe off the truck. I told the drivers to call the company and tell them that the load needed to be transfered. At this time they was only 51 miles away from their drop off. Freightliner wouldn't do anything and I even called the help desk to see if they could make them fix the truck. They did come out and take off the pipe because the truck couldn't even move because the pipe was off.

The drivers called me back said that the company couldn't find another truck and that they was just going to go ahead and finish the run. Then I called the TA in Monroe, Mi to see if they could fix it and they said sure if they got here before Freightliner closed so they could go get the parts. They stopped their and they said they would do it and the drivers went ahead finished the load even after I told them to get the load transfered. I called them up after they dropped the load and ask them if they would like me to drive up their and drive the truck back home and they could drive my Exployer back home because nobody would take my credit card over the phone. They said no that they was just going to drive the truck back down to the TA in Monroe, Mi and get the truck Fixed. I told them that they couldn't sleep in a truck like that and to get a hotel. They got a hotel and Fyda Freightliner paid to have a new muffler and pipes put on because they didn't hook everything back up the right way. As far a mask from Wal Mart, yes I told them to buy a mask if they wanted to because of the smell, but Not a paper Mask like what is being said.

They Drove the truck for Almost 5 weeks after the pipe came off the truck. They got upset because I wanted them to overnight the paper work of the runs they did over they last four weeks of running because their own truck was in the shop getting fixed. They needed to pay a repair bill on their truck that was over 6000.00. Well the shop wasn't going to let the truck go because they didn't have the money to pay the bill. So me being a dumb a$$ went down to the shop and signed a note so their drivers could go back out on the road. Because they drive my wifes truck and my fahter in law loaned them the money for the down payment on the truck they got. Me and my wife have done but make this husband and wife team feel like they was part of our family over the last year and half. Let them use our 2002 Company car for over 9 months because they didn't even have a car. Rented them our house in Akron for a 500.00 lost every month because they couldn't pay the higher rent and because he drove for us at 1st. Helped the Wife get her CDL and so she could drive with her husband. The list goes on.

So I guess you could say "I hope all owners are not like this".

Now we've heard 'both sides of the story', I'd say it's time for the parties involved to take it behind closed doors, ok?

Greg,
You honestly think it's wrong to want to hire a driver with mechanical knowledge? If a driver is running a truck and doesn't know where the dipstick is then you are asking for trouble. Plus I hear people talk about this interview process, and having the drivers take a road test why not have a pre trip inspection be a part of this interview process? Most of my friends are drivers, and we all grew up working around the farm so i guess we had no choice but to learn mechanics. Plus it doesn't take a mechanic to swap out a light bulb, belt, air hose, or a mud flap. It just takes common sense. Maybe they should add some of these classes in the driving school, and ask more mechanical questions on the cdl test. if a driver can not take care of his equipment then he is not a driver he is a steering wheel holder and better be hoping he doesn't get out in wyoming or montana and lose a belt cause they could be waiting a long time for a mechanic to come and swap it out when they could have taken an emergency belt swaped it out and got to a mechanic or truck stop to get the real deal.

I appoligize to Dave if he is offended by my comments. I hope not.

But Worried in Akron I am wondering about your last comment;

"My My My Dave you shoud have thought before you opened your mouth and as ussual you didnt lol.We never said names we asked opinions. We didnt tell the whole story for legal reasons and you know it see ya in court!"

Not saying this because of any defense for Dave but here is something that bothers me - What made you think that telling an incomplete story would benefit anyone?

What legal reason would you have not saying the name of the owner but talk about the owner?

I know my lawyer would have remind me to not to say anything... period, but then my lawyer would have loved it if the opposition opened their mouth on a public forum about the subject giving him more leverage.
