Occasionally when someone asks a frequently asked question something in the thread spurs a decent discussion. More often than not the question will get a couple responses and then die out from disinterest, because people have already invested time and energy on the very same topic in a previous thread. The faq poster is really doing themself a disservice, because the couple responses they do get only scratch the surface of what has been said about the subject. There is a reason for each line of my signature line.

I thought this was a forum for people to talk about things, ask questions, etc. I have looked through old posts, faqs, etc. Lots of great info. But its nice to see if people are doing anything new and different! The last 2 weeks on here, everyone is uptight about answering anything. Everything is "use the search! use the search!"

Thank you to the people who have replied with some great info!

You're welcome. But as EB said, most folks get tired of reading the same questions, and typing the same replies. In the area of creature comforts & power to run them, not much has changed: you decide what you want [and can afford, lol], then figure how much power is needed to run those things, and take it from there.
Just keep in mind that what you spend on food prep & entertainment items is saving money in the long run - truckstops & motels are expensive.

You are welcome. I try to give advice that helps people improve their search for good information on this forum.

Try and consider this. Someone asks the question: What does the name urbsk8er mean? It is a topic near and dear to you, so you jump in and give a well thought out, thorough explanation of where the name comes from and what it means. Next week someone else starts a new thread and asks the same question. You are still excited, so you answer the question again and even add some things you forgot to mention the first time. The next week some one asks--what does the name urbsk8er mean?--now it's getting old and you may grumble a little, but you decide to give an abbreviated version of your explanation. The following weeks people ask the question again and again. You continue answering, but the answers get shorter; you have other topics on the forum that you are interested in these days. Two days later, one of your answered threads is still only a couple threads down from the new question asking--what does the name urbsk8er mean?--and someone asks what does the name urbsk8er mean? Do you keep answering the question? Another dilemma is being created. Keep answering the question and anytime someone does a search for the subject of "urbsk8er" they get a longer list of hits with more and more weak answers because people are tired of answering the same question.

"Use the search. Use the search" is a polite abbreviated way of saying that the topic is very thoroughly discussed in other threads. I've tried to beef up the idea by adding faq and search advice in my signature line.

[Urbsk8er, don't take this explanation personally. I'm just using this as a chance to explain something about faq's and the "use the search" advice. I am frequently criticized for advocating the "use the search" advice--they say--just answer the question. Then.....the "just answer the question" crowd becomes burned out and join the "use the search" crowd, or they quit answering faq's or they disappear.]

So what does urbsk8er mean?

In response to the original question, I live about 1 hour west of Canton. I drive a van on with one of the big 5. I can get home, whether I really want to or not, just about every week as many loads pass very near my home weekly. I was previously on with another big 5 carrier where I had a similar experience. For example, I am at home today on a load I picked up in Roanoke,Virginia on friday that delivers in Ypsilanti, Michigan tommorow morning. I generally deadhead home from southeast Michigan when I unload there (about 120 miles) because the wait there for more freight can be long and I generally get very good freight out of my home area any time I want it. This isn't a "one size fits all" kind if business. To directly answer you though, Canton has been good to me and my van.

Another question...

Do most of you guys in CV's have a tv? fridge? Do most people in vans run that stuff with an inverter/battery set up? or do most carry a generator?

I have all the above but I rarely use any of it...except the tv. I was just as successful, in fact probably more so, when I had a very bare bones van...less weight, less maintainence, etc., less cost..my clothes, a sleeping bag, and I was set.

Ebsprintin,
When I was 14 or 15 (I'm almost 29 now), I was big into the aggressive inline skating thing. A group of us started some skate group called u.r.b..(sk8er being the skater part).. I'd love to tell you what it stood for, but truth is, I can't remember. My screen name on aol is the same, and I have had that email so long, I just keep using it b/c its easy to remember. I have other emails, etc for more professional matters, but for forums, etc, it still works.
I had a fair share of people think it is said "urb", sounding like "herbs" thinking I was into weed. Def. not. Its meant to be "u,r,b,skater".

Quit the skating thing when I was about 16. Sinse then I've rode/raced motocross. Thought about turning pro a few years back, but spending the $$ to do so wasn't worth it for me.

Thanks for the replies from everyone. Like I said previously, I don't forsee myself getting out there and driving. I have been considering buying and van or sprinter, and putting it on with a company. Feel free to PM me if anyone would have some good info/advice on doing so.

I've been asking alot about setup in vans/sprinters b/c I am a carpenter by trade, but you name it, I can prolly fix it/build it. I see so many van setups, and my mind just starts running with ideas. I keep thinking I can build a lighter, better, more comfortable van set up. Just haven't had time to sit down and draw some stuff up.
