high mpg

I'm still getting used to the MBE4000/Ultrashift combo. I had a very good weekend run from Houston to the northeast of about 1600 miles but only had about 55 hours to get there. I ran 70 in the 70 zones and 65 in the 65 zones and what little bit was lower limits I ran the limit there. For the entire trip I got 9.7mpg and was surprised it was as high as that. Since then I've run a pretty constant 58 mph with some maybe up to 60-61 but no higher. Over 3 fillups I've averaged a consistent 11.2mpg. By giving up 10mph of speed I've gained 1.5mpg in fuel economy.

As a solo, if I did 97,000 miles at 9.7mpg that would be 10k gallons of fuel. At 11.2mpg it would be 8660 gallons. At $4 a gallon that's 1340*4 or $5360 more in my pocket and not into the pump. It will take about 250 extra hours of driving over the course of the year to save that so I'm paying myself a little over $21 per hour to drive those extra hours. On a cpm basis I'm saving about 5.5cpm. If my carrier offered me a nickel a mile raise I'd certainly take it. Why not create it for myself when I so easily can?

Slow down = make money.

We've been tracking fuel mileage in this truck very closely for the last year. We have discovered that our best mileage comes when we run 63-65 on open highway. The tach is right at 1400 at that speed. When there any hills, if we run slower than that our fuel mileage drops. If we slow down to 60 with hills, the truck will downshift and run the tach up and there goes our fuel mileage. If we run faster than 63-65 our fule mileage drops like a rock.

Not only does the slower speed help your fuel mileage it helps your stress level. We have found that driving slower reduces our stress level and at the end of our shift we are not exhausted and uptight about fighting with traffic. We do not fight with traffic anymore we just roll along. When we do an escort load with a truck that runs the speed limit I am amazed at how much more stressed I get from worrying about having to pass people and running in the hammer lane.

One of the factors in fuel mileage we like to play with also is FSC. Our FSC is figured on a D truck at 9 MPG and every tenth of a mile per gallon you can get over the 9 just lowers your fuel costs. Using FedEx Custom Critical FSC for this week for a D truck is .3060 your fuel price on all authorized miles would be 1.25 at 9 miles per gallon. When Leo gets 11 miles per gallon his fuel costs per gallon is only .54 cents per all authorized miles. FedEx Custom Critical pays fsc on all authorized mile which is from where you are sitting to the customer for pick up , all miles to customer for delivery and then all miles to your express center. In other words if you do not go to Wal-Mart or any personal business you will get paid a fsc on every mile you drive.

If you are on a 1000 mile run and your average fuel cost is $3.958 and with our fsc of .306 your fuel will cost $139.00 after fsc is applied. If you are on the same run though and get 11 mpg your cost of fuel is $54.00 after fsc is applied.

At 9 mpg you will buy 111 gallons of fuel and at 11 mpg you will only buy 91 gallons of fuel. On a long run you can even make up time while traveling at a slow pace as you will not have to stop for fuel as often.

Might like to rethink that rear end ratio...

at this speed you are messing with all the speed limiters trucks...
a rear end change will pay for it self quick ,and reward you and your truck for years to come ,
it make it easy to actually get some sleep there in the back...
dont be fulled by low fuel prices , listen to the news !, it is just an election gimmick.

After reading these posts like this why do folks still drive fast?

Don't forget all the benefits to your tires and brakes by running slower.

moose,a few years ago i had a tractor that i thought i could get into the 7mpg stage,i went from a 3.70 rear end to a 3.58,my fuel mileage droped from 6.9 to 6.5,it actually took more power to run the same speed with the faster ratio. The next truck i bought had the new eletronic engine, same body style truck, this time went to the 3.42 gears, truck was my 1st truck to break 7 mpg.The truck i have now,has 3.73 gears and i get any where from 7 mpg to almost 9,just depends on the weight and speed i run.of course the hills will determine it too.State of ohio is great though, mostly run high 8's low 9's,58 mph tops.and this is my 1st Detroit motor, the others were cats.

Moose.

We don't own the truck, or pay for fuel. But if it were up to us, we'd probably do that.
We tried running 58-60 mph for a few months and the fuel mileage dropped to about 7mpg overall. So we bumped it up, I just looked, and last month we got an average of 7.6 mpg this month so far, 7.8 mpg
