High and tight

I had hoped by now that people had learned how to drop a name into a Google search and read the news reports (political blogs are not news reports). In this case that's harder to do because it's pretty much the McMinnville newspaper and a bazillion right wing Blogs, because, you know.... fake outrage

The principal sent the kid home, told mom the haircut needed to be altered before the kid could return to school, and why. Mom agreed, altered the haircut and sent the kid back to school. But because she didn't like the way it was handled, she went by the local paper and gave her side of the story.

That's where the story died, until 2 months later when a right wing Blogger picked up in it, couldn't let a perfectly good fake outrage go to waste, and posted about it, and it was instantly propagated to the bazillion mindless right wing Blogs that greedily lap up whatever outrage du jour content they can get.

All fine and dandy, but ya have to agree that it was a crappy thing for the principle to do.

Without knowing the rules on haircuts at the school, I really can't say.

I really doubt the principal made the kid change the haircut because it was a military style cut, and military style cuts are the only styles that are against the rules. More likely the rule is 'no buzz cut designs' and if he made an exception for this kid he'd have to make exceptions for every other kid. If that's the case, then I have little problem with it, particularly since the mom so quickly agreed to change the cut. She likely knew the rules and was hoping for an exception.

School has been out for a while now in TN, so it's all small-m moot, anyway.

I suspect the answer lies in the observation "Mom told the school it wasn't a Mohawk".....:D

My wife has an elementary school teacher friend in McMinville, I'll try and get the inside scoop.

The photo clearly showed a "high and tight". Nobody would consider it a mohawk. Nobody at all with any sense anyway.

The sole photo shows it from overhead, at an angle that doesn't show how "high' it was, so it's quite possible that it resembled a Mohawk, or maybe just a Mohawk in the making. Even if it didn't when the decision was made, it's easy to see that it would, without meticulous trimming. Can't blame the principal if he didn't care to bet on the kid & family to keep up with it - kids have notoriously short attention for some of their enthusiasms.

Could it be the pic was taken after mom re-cut it so he could go to school?
And why are we getting our boxers in a wad over something that happened 3 or 4 years ago?
My first wife used to bring up mistakes i made years before in arguments, I hate that crap.

It didn't happen 3 or 4 years ago, it happened in March of 2015. The school district released a statement on March 25th (Press Release~pdf) in response to the article printed in the March 22nd edition of the Southern Standard newspaper. They're is no specific district-wide policy on haircuts, and each school sets is own policy. The policy at Bobby Ray Elementary is one that bans "mohawk haircuts and other extreme cuts."

The school is not anti military, despite the ridiculous claims of the mother who discovered her 15 minutes of fame, likes the attention, and managed to become just a little more drama queen with every succeeding interview by each new member of the media ("The school is not only anti military haircut, they're anti Army!" she wails as she leans back fanning herself recovering from the vapors, as any decent southern woman is wont to do, milking all the sympathy she can muster mister in playing the military patriot card). Less than two weeks earlier this "anti military" elementary school, on March 12, 2015, commemorated it's namesake by hosting a reenactment of a military funeral for the students by the Bobby Ray Detachment Corps League in the school gym.

A high and tight is a number 1/2 on the sides and back and a number 1 on the entire top plate, clearly shown in the photo. A Mohawk is a number 1/2 everywhere except about a one inch wide strip down the center of the top plate that is usually more like a number 2 or 3 cut and covers only about a fourth to at most a third of the top plate. Nobody could possibly mistake or argue the two unless they had an agenda, especially with a photo clearly showing the entire top plate being the slightly longer hair as it should be.

The school district never called it a Mohawk. The principle never called it a Mohawk. The policy specifically states "No mohawks, no haircuts that are distracting," and that's exactly what the note sent home from the principle stated. The only person arguing using the Mohawk argument is the mother. You have clearly and successfully identified the one with the agenda.

After the story was picked up by news outlets across the state, and Amy Stinnett and son Adam appeared nationally on "Fox and Friends," mommie Amy commented to the Chattanooga Times Free Press that Adam is loving the attention. "Thursday night he said, 'Momma, after tomorrow I'm going to be famous,'" Stinnett said.

A couple of weeks later she gave Adam another high and tight (she's the "barber" in all this) and sent him off to school, and noted her surprise and dismay when the principal didn't send Adam home or contact her about it. Stinnett said she is considering legal action against the school.

Me thinks momma likes the attention, too.

But her 15 minutes are up.

That was more in reply for the potential belief it was a mohawk here rather than there.
