How do you feel about small box trucks, yellow penske cubes, that are not DOT compliant, running with a gross weight over 10K lbs?

For those trucks, I say look for a local company that needs help delivering on route work, so that the pay is the same every week. I had a small trucking company long ago and we contracted with an auto parts supplier to deliver to dealerships and tire stores, and I used the same type truck, econoline 350 diesel box truck and grossed $200 a day.
