A $300 million cash-for-clunkers-type federal program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances provides a glimmer of hope for beleaguered makers of washing machines and dishwashers, but it's probably not enough to lift companies such as Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR - News) and Electrolux out of the worst down cycle in the sector's history.

Beginning late this fall, the program authorizes rebates of $50 to $200 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances. The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. Program details will vary by state, and the Energy Dept. has set a deadline of Oct. 15 for states to file formal applications. The Energy Dept. expects the bulk of the $300 million to be awarded by the end of November. (Unlike the clunkers auto program, consumers won't have to trade in their old appliances.)

"These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement announcing the plan. Only appliances covered by the Energy Star seal will qualify. In 2008, about 55% of newly produced major household appliances met those standards, which are set by the Energy Dept. and Environmental Protection Agency.

I don't understand the article....it don't make sense....we do a lot of Whirlpool and they are holding their own...very few cut backs and plants are going 2 shifts....unless we are going to support foreign appliance makers?

I don't get these programs??? Where is the money for these government rebates coming from? I'm assuming from taxes, which means if I can't afford a new car even with the rebate; I am expected to pay taxes towards someone else getting a good deal on a car. Am I jealous--well, yeah kinda.

Seems like it would have made more sense to give businesses a tax break---and if they wanted to provide better incentives on cars, frigidaires or whatever, they could do so.

LOL....barry cut taxes!?!? LOL....

I know what you mean and i am not questioning your statement or your sanity...but all barry as said is that he will RAISE taxes on businesses and let the bush tax cuts expire....oh and yea, "spread the wealth"......

These idiotic programs are nothing more then "pandering" to the people...just as you said..YOU are paying for others to enrichen their lives while you go without those new items....lol, and for the most part, the people that took advantage of the "cash for clunkers" and now the "cash for appliances" really don't need the "incentives"....but they figure if the gov is going to give money away, they might as well take advantage of it.......

Wrong Wrong Wrong

If you want to stimulate the markets that these companies are selling, then have the government stay out of the markets. This is another feel good thing going on with an out of control congress.

The "cash for good usable cars" was a failure, the entire program wasn't needed and the only purpose was to bring the sales of GM and Chrysler products up to make it look like Obama did the right thing - don't believe me?

Look what would have been a far better thing to do is to lower the price of the cars, eliminate the rules and regulations that were imposed on the dealers and get the government out. The same effect would have happened, sales would have spiked and in reality Honda and Toyota would not have gained market share. Instead we spent money we don't have (remember we are coming up to the end of the fiscal year for the government) which we are borrowing the money which means every dollar we borrow, we pay back a dollar and a half all for a small spike in sales and now faced with another downturn from the fall out.

But again greed from GM and Chrysler who didn't want to actually do something right has cause more debt with this single issue, bad management in the auto companies.
