Helping Others and Promoting EO

While it may sound strange to those who participate daily in the Open Forum and others who read EO on a regular basis, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of expediters on the road today have never heard of EO or if they have, rarely visit the site.

I base that on the experience we have talking to expediters on the road. Our new truck has a larger-than-normal sleeper and eye-catching graphics. While every expediter gets approached on the road by others with questions about their rigs or expediting itself, we get more than our share. Most days, three to five people people ask about our truck and work. That's about 100 a month or 1,200 a year.

Some of those folks are shippers and consignees who would have no reason to visit EO. Others are curious for the moment but have no reason to further seek out expediting information. But many are expediters or expediter wannabees, almost all of whom say they have never heard of EO. While we fix that on the spot by handing out a copy of Expedite NOW and "Introduction to Expediting" it is hard to grasp the fact that many expediters on the road and other people considering the expediting opportunity don't know about EO. Yet that's what the ones we talk to tell us.

An easy way to promote EO is to pick up extra copies of Expedite NOW when you see them on the free magazine racks at truck stops. When people approach you, give them a copy.

When someone asks you about expediting, you can do them a big favor by directing them to EO; THE information hub of the expediting industry.

I try to spread the word whenever possible. With over 100 lights and and all the chrome inside and out on this red creation, people usually come up and ask about the truck (usual comment- "I've never seen a red one before...") and then follow up with the usual "Do you make good money as an expediter?" I most often reply that good money is a relative term, and then direct them to check out the site, as the collective group can better answer their questions. I also have a few leftover handouts from the expo, which i now give out just so they have a physical reminder to give the site a look. I've had about a dozen cups of coffee with people who wanted me to sit down over breakfast and explain how Expedite works. A couple have actually called me up on their way to orientation. Kinda makes you feel good.

When I have talked to ppl wanting info I have always been up front and staight with them. I have always advised folks DO NOT SELL THE FARM in order to buy a vehicle that depreciates 20% a year. Keep your home and your backyard as it appreciates and you have a place to go to rather then the T/A or the J,you know what I mean. Expedite companies are fickle, they change policys which can leave you out in the cold, events can happen beyond your control and you are left with a limited use vehicle and a high payment.

After 11 years, I can't agree with you more Rich. The industry is volital, where one can be bought out by another company in a flash...and let the changes begin. I remember Roberts and how it was back then. After Fedex took them over, all the signage had to be changed, then painting the boxes white and don't forget that was 2000 which was a dismal year to begin with and where many people quit or lost their trucks. Nobody is exempt from that regardless of the vehicle you drive. Life is too short to spend in a truck...you miss out on so much..family, friends, special events. While yes you can visit friends and family while on the road...how many times have you made plans only to be dispatched and had to cancel the visit? Expediting will be here long after I'm gone....and while we always give our best, my time spent away from it... I'm beginning to enjoy more and more.

Wow, I had no idea everybody was so down about the industry they are in. Besides wasn't this about promotinf the Site, not necessarily the buisness?

I promote EO but first I promote my company - FedEx than EO.

I tell whom ever there are people here that are very helpful and others, well you got to take with a grain of salt and wonder.

As for a shipper reading EO, I do not want do not say a word about EO to any shipper. I don't want them to judge me or my company by my posts or other people's comments.

Many of you will disagree but I don't care.

The intention of your post to spread the word is very good, but somehow I find reading the above quote about the same as listening to chalk scratch across the blackboard.

Perhaps the reason I feel this way is that we also run a custom truck with a ~16 ft sleeper that we are quite proud of, as no doubt you are of yours. There are a great number of folks running with spiffy custom trucks that garner attention so I don't see how you garner "more than our share" of attention than any of the rest of us.

Sorry for the blackboard effect. By "more than our share" I was not speaking exclusively. The comment would apply to anyone who drives a distinctive truck. Sorry. I could have worded it better.

You have commented in passing about your truck with full features but I know little else about it. I'd love to see more about it if you care to share.

No problem. :)

Bah, our truck is just another truck. :)

I don't remember half the specs but I'll provide a brief overview.

Out front is Kenworth T800 powered by Caterpillar C12 + 13 speed manual. At the rear is a 14' reefer box. The space in between is occupied by a custom Bentz sleeper.

Other items:

Dual 150 gal fuel tanks
Custom moose bars
Auto-greaser
Auto-inflation
Quadraleveler system
Spectra in-cab brake condition display
Custom audio/video recording system
Proheat Gen4 & Espar
Michelin tires + Dura-Bright wheels
Temperature control with in-cab monitoring & hardcopy
In-cab truck scale
Outdoor temperature monitoring
Bostrom "Wide Ride" seating
Lift gate
Wildlife dispersal system
Hadley train horns
Diesel cold weather assist starting system
Custom stereo/video system

Occasionally the truck gets tweaked. Not that we have had trouble with the Proheat & Espar, but there is consideration to swapping it out for a dual generator setup.

Deer alerts=wildlife dispersal systems, sound like something the - ---- would say.

I would think the Hadley train horns qualify as a wildlife or any other form of life dispersal system.

Paul, what is the Quadraleveler system. Is that similar to the system R.V.'s use to level the unit when parked?

Back in my Rail Road days we used to hit sooo many deer going up to Ludington and the thumb. We'd lay on the horn, flash the lights, and still they just stared. If a locomotive don't scare them off I don't think those little noise makers are going to do much good.

Thinking about asking Mr Mc Cord if I can have some Mud Flap's made that Say "Expediters Online" with the website address on it. Let me know if anyone else would like to buy a set if he gives his blessing to the mud flap Ideal.

> Wildlife dispersal system? Please elaborate. :D

That comment Rich made was funny. :)

Must have been the marketing folks at this place that came up with the phrase: http://www.shuroo.net/

It was one of those things we added on an experimental basis with no expectations of performance. We run mainly in country where we have expectations of coming across this kind of wildlife on a regular basis: http://www.hww.ca/hww2.asp?id=93

Does it actually work? I cannot say with 100% certainty that it does, but we still turn it on when rolling during evening, night and early morning hours.

We depend more on good lighting, being alert and constantly scanning than on that device. If worst comes to the worst the moose bars will prevent severe damage.

Several years ago in a different rig we had the misfortune of running into a bull moose that charged up from the side of the road. The bars on that truck got all bent out of shape and there was quite the mess.

Fortunately that was the one and only time, so far. <crossing fingers>
