Hello, my wife n I are thinking of moving to the life of expediters but dont know much. I am wondering if what I am being offered by O/O at panther are being fair by normal standerds.
I am being offered 40% of what the owner makes but no pay for mty miles. I am being asked to pay $50 a week for deductable until I reach the amount of $5000.00. Isnt that too high. How about a 30 day notification before quiting with the o/o. and even if the owner is paying the fuel we are being asked to pay 45% of fuel taxes. doesnt anyone think that if I am just the driver and not paying fuel why should we pay for the tax on it? and what is the deal with contracts that renew every 30 days. can anyone provide with some sort of help or comments? thanks.

Bad contract. Does that mean you get paid if there's a fuel tax rebate? In that case, you could easily fuel in the highest IFTA states and make money that way. That is the reason the one paying for fuel should be the ONLY one dealing with the taxes.

Tho I disagree with any deductable escrow, Davekc makes a good arguement for it. My problem is that a majority of owners will not put the money away in an interest bearing account. And when it's time for you to leave, the money isn't there. Kinda like the guvmint taking care of Social Security.

30 day notification is too much. The owners don't need more than the typical two weeks.

40% or more of the dh money should go to the drivers. Too many owners want their drivers to do something for nothing.

100% of accessorial charges should go to the drivers, with the exception of liftgate. In other words, charges where the owner does nothing.

Hope that helps; and hope you can find a better deal.

Before you do anything else you need to read back at least 1 year in the general, newbies and recruiter forums. If you had already read that much you'd know the contract you mention is a bad one. You don't have to read every word of every post but you do need to read back through the thread titles and read the ones that catch your eye.

Hey Leo, just a thought, no need to post a reply....

I am just wondering if some of the mods can actually come up with a list of links to post so some newbies can look at them instead of searching. You can add to it while time goes on and put it up as a sticky in this forum, maybe dropping the other forum. Other forum sites do this instead of telling people to search, have you tried to search something without knowing what you are searching for?

Greg, not just in answer to you but for anyone looking into expediting, that's a good idea and the original intent of the newbies faq section was to be just that. Notice though that I never used the word search. You're right, search implies knowing what you need and looking for it. What I said was to read back. My meaning is that if one is considering expediting as a career they should invest the hours and hours and hours and hours reading, studying and learning about it that would be required for any other vocation.

Look at the catalog of the local community college at the a/c, mechanic, electrician, plumber or any other vocation at how much education and time is required. Why should people come here thinking they can read for a few hours and ask a handful of questions and be knowledgeable and prepared for what could be a lifetime career just like any of those others? Is it any wonder the door revolves so fast when everybody wants to get the quick answer and won't put in the time to really learn?

I do hope we can start over building a faq list but even if we do build a superb one my advice to read back a year will remain. I am certain people will find threads that interest them and teach them things that wouldn't be covered in a faq file because we're all different and find interest in different things.

For someone new, I would use the faq section as a starter. Primarily to get a feel for the carriers, lifestyle, and some of the terminology. Then of course proceed to the last six months of posts unless it is the Truck Talk section. Too many things at some of the carriers are much different now than six months ago. Mechanical issues and the like evolve at a much slower pace.
I would then of course recommend a face to face with people in the industry and attend the expo in Wilmington.

It's a BS offer.
We have only been at this 3 years but have had the misfortune of playing this game.
You should be a good student and study the archives but more importantly seek advice or mentorship from someone in similar shoes..

And remember, 40% of $1.50, and 30% of $2.00 shall be the same. Samo.

Sometimes the same song and dance needs updating. The more times we cover the same topic, the easier it'll be for a newb to find it.

thank you all for the help, I will see what I can findout. However, I am not sure how to compare for better deals if panther will not give me names and numbers of other owners. do you think I have to go thru them to find an owner that fits my needs. I am also wondering if there are other expediters that deal with or are closer to, or in the state of texas. thanks

Talk with folks here and use the classifieds on here. Lots of good owners out there need drivers. Just be sure the contract is in writing and fair.

I do know that its 40% of 1.35
does anyone know for sure if panther really only payes one rate because I have heard different pays $1.35 n $1.20. I have also heard of more pay if its a hazmat load or if its a canada load.
All I really know is that the more I read the more I see that this is turning out to be a bad deal. ths

Keep reading, it will become clear after you send 40 or 50 hours reading on here. Then you can ask even better questions.
