Check more into the company you plan to build your fleet with first. Ask questions like how many of the company employees/dispatchers have relatives with trucks running with them and if the company caters to any particular fleet owner. We didn't and later
found out that many of the drivers/fleet owners are related to management and dispatchers...kinda hard to compete against kinfolk especially durring lean times.
How many trucks did this company have? Reason I ask is there are only so many trucks you can fit in <insert small town>. Any smart company owner who hires family knows it's probably easier to please family; so it's smarter to keep his non-family trucks rollin. Of course, this isn't always the case. Personally, I wouldn't like signing on trucks that have more decal residue on it than paint. But if they would have any complaints of favoritism with me, I'd just point to the computer and say "You're seein what I'm seein."
I see your point, tho. Families are funny things. They can be all selfishly greedy together, or they can help everyone succeed, and share in the greed. At the end of the day, if everyone's done their job, they should be happy with their chunk of the pie.
