hello all Wade here, i have read all the post about how slow van work is and how bad layovers are, but despite that i am still interested in expediting i live on the east coast CT an own a 2002 E350 extended powerstroke van.i know my van is a little older but it is well maintained and i can handle any repairs or maintaince it may need large or small and i also have spare parts waiting to go trans, rear end if i need them.my truck is paid for so that is not an issue, hard work is not an issue, driving and being away is also not a problem.what would i need beyond what i have listed to get going? license, insurance, permitts, authority?and where would i look to find some work even if it is slow?alittle work for me right now would go along way!my pesent businness that i have done for 24yrs. is done at the moment with very little hope of anything changing so like i said alittle expediter work would be much better than what i have now.THANKS,Wade

I would suggest talking to any of the companies that advertise on this site. They can tell you exactly what you need to get started.:)

hello all Wade here, i have read all the post about how slow van work is and how bad layovers are, but despite that i am still interested in expediting i live on the east coast CT an own a 2002 E350

You are in a good area for expediting. There are a lot of good loads that originate from the east coast and there are never very many trucks there to take them. I know panther has a lot of freight in the east coast and they will take on a van from the year 1999 and on. You should contact panther to see if they are recruiting. What I would do in this slow time is run one decent load out of CT and then try and get a smaller load that pays your way back home and avoid sitting on the road. Hope that helps.

Been told Express 1 and T-State have moratoriums on vans but check with Tryours and Bolt. They might take on a van. Have a friend with Tryours and her van is a 1999 so they must accept older vans. Doesn't hurt to call and ask. ;)

beltfed,
Do you not understand what all these companies you are calling are telling you.
Now is not the time to be doing this.

Only trying to help you from doing something that may effect the rest of your life in a negative way.
Would a 6 month wait be impossible.
I would want to start out in a new "business" in the best of times, not the worst.

if you, absolutely, positively, undeniably, cannot stay out of the truck call some local courier companies, somebody like velocity and see if they are hiring.

but as you have learned many expedite companies just are not taking on vans so that lane of travel is closed for domestic repair.

Sorry, Beltfed, I have to agree with the last responder. Most expedite companies are not accepting vans right now. Have you considered dumping the van, getting a team driver, and finding an owner of a straight truck to hire you on?

My husband and team for an owner in a straight truck - Requires B Class license. The truck owner pays fuel, maintenance, insurance, everything having to do with the truck. We give them 60% of run in exchange. We don't make it home very often, usually once every 6 weeks, because owner pays deadhead fuel and we try to get the run in the right direction to keep deadhead down. I'm not going to tell you its great our there in a D Unit either - its been really slow. January was our worst month ever! But as a team you have the ability to run coast-to-coast and never run out of hours. That's why there is little need for a solo van - you are limited in distance you can run.

I hope this helps. If you want to learn more, post a private message.

I would have to agree with the above posts. Nobody is taking on vans and some are even getting rid of them. If you really want to get into this and cant be talked out of it, then consider calling the carriers and put yourself on the team driving lists for straight trucks. If, in 6 months things change for the van market and you still wanna do this, you will have experience in this business that will put you in better shape to survive when you are paying all the bills :)
