Healthy food on the road

Despite my best efforts, I'm finding that eating healthy consistently during my 3 weeks a month on the road is much easier said than done.

Has anyone else had this same issue and if so, how did you overcome it? This battle of the butt I find myself in is kicking my butt..

There are some ideas in the Women's Forum on this growing issue.... It is really a battle as food, sugar, and caffein is used to keep us awake and moving when we get tired. Once this habit starts it is really hard to break.

All the same ideas park far away as possible fro buildings, when going inside take the longest route, when stopping at a rest area walk around before getting back in the truck. Buy healthy foods and stay away from the snack isles.

One thing I recently learned is that a coffee maker helps cut down on those unintended calories. Those coffee shops are the ultimate diet buster. It's all too easy to succumb to the sideline temptation like muffins and scones when pursuing the old caffeine fix.

Always have a bag of lettuce or spinach in your fridge with your fav dressing. You can add the bag of precooked chicken strips for lean and green. We use pico for the tomAtoes, onions in salads. In the produce section. Fresh fruit in a basket like at home. Pretzels are lowfat stick in your mouth snacks. Pickles have no calories. Cheese sticks. The bagel thins or tortillas make tasty sandwiches less calories. Make when laying over, put in ziploc bags. We use a small cooler between the seats and change it out when we change drivers. Water bottles and Starbucks VIA my best friends. And flavored drink sticks you pour in the water.

We use flavored cream cheese on the bagels/tortillas for flavor. VIA sticks are about $1.25 each in the package. Get them at wallyworld or Starbucks. So handy for quick pickmeup. Broccoli florets and Kraft free dressing - cut a paper cup in half to hold the dressing. Ten calories

Great idea on the Broccoli...Carrot sticks are another good standby.

We eat mostly fruit and vegetables, including a variety of dried fruits. We will buy our food at WaMart on the road. We make sandwiches with whole grain bread and low fat/sodium lunch meats. Unless it's pouring down rain or a blizzard, we walk 45 minutes a day, often times that means walking the full circumference of the truckstop or WalMart parking lot 6 or more times. It works for us. We maintain our weight, my blood sugar stays level, and our blood pressures and cholesterol levels are at the low end of healthy. For us, the walking also clears our heads, breaks up the monotony.

We drink a lot of water and in the heat we munch a lot of ice.

That is good advice, but I'm not home enough to tend a garden.

I stole your chips >;D

:DUsualy when im out I find grocery stores that sell whole pre-cooked rotisorie chikens they have less fat but you still need to watch the salt. Or carry a grill that gives you more controll especialy with the salt and other ingredeants I try to portion them so get at least two good meals depending on how big they are and have some meat for snacking. Loose the skin as it cuts down on fat. MEAT PROTIEN will out last most any snacks as your body has to actualy work to break them down. Keep some vegitables on the truck. BTW dont try buying frozen vegies hoping as they thaw you can snack on them unless you like room temp partialy cooked food. I tried it it didnt do it for me. If sandwiches and salads are your deal, try RAW FRESH spinich rather than lettice on your sandwich and add it to your salad.
I also try to bring my bicycle and ride a mile or two go slow at first if its been a while to get used to it this will also help you stay in shape and flexable so you reduce the chance of injury.:D
