after i took the test (doing things backwards) i was fingerprinted, pay my $60 or so and waited for 21 days. once i had the letter (which actually says i am no threat, LOL) i went back to our lovely SOS and went through explaining what HazMat means.

Here in Ohio it can take up to 8 weeks for the "Threat Assessment" to be completed.

I called the 800 number that was in the letter I receiver, gave them the info required, had my VISA card tagged for $94.00, then drove 92 miles (round trip) to the nearest fingerprint station (there are only 4 in the state....DUH). Now I'm awaiting the letter which I was told could take 7 to 8 weeks to arrive so I can take my renewal test.

They also said that if the letter is lost you have to start the process from scratch. In addition the letter will have a very generic looking return address, so I was cautioned to open everything even if it looks like junk mail.

What a load of crap!!!!!!

I'm getting ready to start the process of mine here in Ohio also. Hopefully it doesn't take as long as they say. I'll probably do a brief write up on the process once it's done.

As Rex says, the first step cost $94.00 at www.myhazprints.com, luckily I'm not too far from a fingerprinting location.

Well, considering that you already have a cdl, the process consist of taking a 25 question test in your state and passing it. After that you have to go to a tsa approved fingerprint station to get electronically fingerprinted. They do a backround check similar to the one you take when you purchase a firearm , however there check takes about a month on average so I am told by my collegues here on EO.If you dont have a cdl you will have to drive a non dot regulated vehicle to do your expediting in. Not a real big deal per se but it does make you more maketable, good luck .............

My hzmat endorsement expires in November. I was wondering if a person has a valid FAST EXPRES card and is still in good standing with both U.S. and Canadian Customs officals could the fingerprinting and background check be waived? I've paid for and gone through the hassle once. Why repeat the process. Can't these government agencies share information? If someone has done this or knows if it can be done please post.

I was told "nope, they are required by law to finger print you for Hazma t when you apply." Most of the information i got from the Hazmat people who took the finger prints has been pretty accurate opposed to the SOS of michigan who can't find their way out of a bag.

Update on the progress of my HazMat renewal:

When I arrived at the house yesterday I found a letter in the mail with a Transportation Security Admin. return address on it, contrary to what I was told by the guy who fingerprinted me. I am very surprised that the time elapsed from the initial contact with the TSA to the receipt of the letter was less than 2 weeks. Extremely unGovernmental!!

I was very pleased to read that I am not considered a security threat (heavy on the sarcasm) and that I may continue my CDL license renewal process with the state of Ohio.

Now I have to get a letter off to my carrier informing them that due to the additional requirements of obtaining a HazMat endorsement there will be a 50% added surcharge to the per mile rate of any HazMat load they wish me to carry on my truck.

I love being an Owner/Operator!!!

While that is impressive turnaround for a government agency, they can't beat the draft board. (Yeah, I'm THAT old.) I had my draft card in 2 days!

Wow! Talk about bringing back memories! My draft lottery number was 1. The good news for me was I had already enlisted the year before.

To this day, I remain impressed with the power government has in our lives and the importance of public policy. Back then, some of our peers were drafted against their will, sent to Viet Nam and killed.
