Have you seen these?

I'm sure many of you have seen the detectors along the interstates in a variety of location, signs, erected posts, over passes. Do you know what they are? Do you know what they imply?

Me either, a few weeks ago I ran into my State Rep. And ask him about it. He had no ideal what I was talking about, but said he would start looking for them in his travels and check into it. I'll hold my breath while waiting for him to get back to me on this. I figure its tracking the EZpass transponders on trucks (I don't have one).

Have you ever wondered how some GPS units can warn you of traffic? Theres your answer. It is the "detectors" that detect stopped or slowed traffic.

Detector is approx. 13”4”x4”, white in color, single cord attached to rear from small solar panel, front has an opaque lens. Unit may be pointed in either travel direction on either side of road with mostly inconsistent spacing, though usually more than 3 miles. If you are traveling the Interstates today, see if you spot any.

They are mostly found in and around major metro areas ie Philly I-95, Dallas and many more. As for the spacing between them it varies from 1, 1.5 or2 mi between sensors. The info is then distributed to various display's, for one example is the dynamic signs displaying travel times that are being erected all over the country. Not everyone pays for the traffic notification on their GPS so the info is distributed in more than one manner.

I believe they use the signal from EZ Pass type units as a signal.

I believe that they measure all traffic. When you see the info boards that say "Travel time to exit ... 12 minutes" these are a result of the monitors. MOst cities also have camersa all around their interstates for general monitoring.

Here is an Example of how they work:

Dallas/Fort Worth Traffic Conditions

When you click on the link there will be a little box to your left that gives you options on what it is you want to see. Check the "Cameras" box for both Dallas and Ft Worth. When you do that, little blue camera "Icons" will pop up all over that map. Just run your mouse over each camera and another little box will pop up showing live feed (sometimes there's a 3-5-10-15 minute delay) of how traffic is moving that area.

It's really neat to watch sometimes, especially at night when there's been like a major accident somewhere. You can see all the Emergency Vehicles lights.....both headlights and taillights of cars sitting in the back up....and so on.

Oh yeah.......

When you have your hand over that camera icon and the "Little" box that shows the traffic moving is up, you can also double click that camera icon so that a "Bigger" box will pop up that shows how the traffic is moving from BOTH directions. IE - East/West - North/South.

I used to watch it all the time when I ran across it (the DFW site).....it is interesting to watch.

I gotta give it to ya Phil...you have developed a sense of humor since moving to Landstar. You should do a "today, I learned" blog on that :D

It's not often seen here, but Phil has shown a sharp sense of humor since way before switching to Landstar.

Phil may just be a little more relaxed since there are no more 3 am Critical Checkout Time alerts.
