Chicago schools have come up with math curriculum that is useful to the student population in their everyday lives and which they actually want to learn.

Chicago Schools are finally starting to teach practical math that these kids can use in real-world situations!

Why the continued posting of hateful rants. I think more people would take you seriously if the debate was confined to the issue and not just a hateful rant.

He just can't help himself ?

Gee ... ya think ? ;)

The irony of it for me is, that I often might agree with the fundamental premise or position of some ... it's just that the route that some are willing to travel to get there is utterly repugnant ...

Same goes for the ways and means that some are willing use to rectify things.

Bingo! Exactly my point. I am more than willing to discuss an issue, if it's a discussion. When the ranting becomes hateful I can't respect the position.

It would be really nice of some members in here did not constantly go out of their way to ridicule other members or look for ways to belittle them with out of context rants of their own.

That would be nice, wouldn't it.

It will NEVER happen. Too many live for doing just that.
Count me among the too many!

From a thread a few years ago:
I'm not so much angry anymore at what w left for our children and grand children to have to muddle through,as young people over whemingly voted the party of death and decay out.I don't believe they will again,in their life times, allow another gang of thieves, bumblers and corrupt idiots to steal our precious nation,

The reply to tallcal's post including the above quote:
Other than the far more corrupt and dishonest thieves they voted into office who've made the Bush numbers look tiny by comparison? As others have also noticed and commented on, you should try to get control of your Bush/republican/conservative hatred. It dilutes and diminishes everything else.

I hope he was holed up with a good book, like "California Slim" by Andrew Bernstein, AKA TallCal.
It's not quite sex, drugs, and rock & roll - Andy keeps the sex private [as it should be], but from the first banjo lessons with a less-than-enthused Jerry Garcia to the stage with Willie Nelson, it's a pretty good read. The language may bother you, or the tons of marijuana, but the descriptions of the San Francisco music scene in the 60's from someone who played a part in it are as 'far out' as the times were back then.
Andy is a talented and creative person - but he is a committed liberal from California, and he didn't stand a chance of being respected around here. That's a pretty ****ing view, and a loss we can ill afford.

Unlike DaveKC, I don't see politics as being about winning - at least, that's not what it should be about. It should be about finding ways to leave the place [neighborhood, city, state, country] better than you found it.
Like Andy, I wish we could focus more on that than on tearing people down because we disagree with them.

Moot has been in the cellar.
Actually I was in the attic. I started in the cellar but Carol was down there chillin' with a bunch of Commodore 64s all wired together. I got frightened and when up to the attic where I stumbled across that tidbit from an ancient thread.

I filed it away in my vast memory bank for future use. Originally I thought I would start a thread using those two quotes with the title: "Look Who's Calling the Kettle Whack." The other day I read the thread about the 5000 portable toilets and thought I would paraphrase the LDB quote by changing just 3 words. So I did and posted it.

Ragman started this thread about hatred and it got me thinking (it does happen sometimes) about hatred. How does it come about that two intelligent men, from different ends of the political spectrum; Tallcal and LDB, get so wrapped up in their political beliefs that they become blinded and consumed with hatred?

In my opinion, Andy lost it sometime during Bush's 2nd term. Prior to that could engage in interesting debates and hold his own even though he was out numbered. Then he started in with the Bush hating and name calling, eventually including Bush senior, Reagan and even Nixon.

Leo really lost it during Obama's second term. Same thing, name calling and then that Chuck Bronson stuff.

It's great to be passionate about an issue but one should be careful not to become a zealot. Extremism tends to reduce one's credibility and hurts the very cause, political party or movement that one is so passionate for. Look what the SDS and Yippies did for the antiwar movement. They probably helped Nixon get elected. Bombing abortion clinics and killing doctors that perform abortions doesn't put the Pro-Lifers in a very good light.

I got a load calling my name. Time to hit the road. Be passionate in what you believe in but don't cross the line into Whackville!

You might be selling a few short. Even though I consider myself "fiscally conservative", I tend to look at things a little differently on the social end of things. I would say there are some that are likely the same way. Then again, maybe not? I think we hear different views all the time from a host of members.
As for politics, it would be great if things could get accomplished in a more cohesive fashion, but that is not the world we live in. Politics shouldn't be just about winning, but it appears that is the way it is. At this point, I would just settle on some common sense regardless of where it is coming from.
